The extended (C) material is only tested here. Topics such as reversible reactions and equilibria, condensation polymerisation, molar enthalpy change calculations, and bond energy calculations may appear exclusively on Paper 2. If you have not revised the extended content, you are walking into this paper with a handicap that no amount of exam technique can compensate for.

Questions demand application, not just recall. Paper 1 might ask you to state the products of electrolysis of copper(II) sulfate solution. Strategies for the extended (C) material

Equilibria questions: Know what dynamic equilibrium means (forward and reverse rates equal, concentrations constant). Know how temperature and pressure changes shift the position of equilibrium. Bond energy calculations: These follow a reliable pattern. List all bonds broken (endothermic, energy in) and all bonds formed (exothermic, energy out). Subtract. Condensation polymerisation: Know that a dicarboxylic acid reacts with a diol, forming a polyester and releasing water. Be able to draw the repeat unit showing the ester linkage. The question may ask you to identify the monomers from a given polymer structure.

Molar enthalpy change: Calculate Q using Q = mcΔT, then divide by moles to get ΔH in kJ/mol. Remember the sign convention: exothermic is negative, endothermic is positive.

This is where many candidates either shine or stumble. Paper 2 regularly presents:

  • Rate graphs: Volume of gas produced against time, or mass loss against time. You might be asked to identify the steepest part of the curve (fastest rate), explain why the curve levels off (reactant used up), or compare two experiments. Read both axes carefully. Check the units.
  • Solubility curves: Solubility (g per 100 g water) against temperature. You might be asked to read a value, predict whether crystals will form at a given temperature, or calculate the mass of solid that crystallises when a saturated solution cools.
  • Results tables: You might be given raw data from a titration and asked to identify concordant results, calculate a mean, or use the result to find an unknown concentration. Show each calculation step.
When reading graphs: always check the axis labels and units before answering. If the y-axis is "volume of CO2 in cm3" and you write your answer in dm3, you have introduced an error. The data presented in the question is the data you should use.

Common pitfalls on Paper 2

  • Answering from memory instead of from the data. If the question says "Use the graph to explain," your answer must reference the graph. A generic explanation that ignores the data provided will score lower than one that uses specific values from it.
  • Ignoring the extended (C) content in revision. Some candidates treat Paper 2 as "just Paper 1 again." It is not. The extended material is unique to this paper. If you have not revised it, those marks are simply unavailable to you.
  • Running out of time on extended responses. Paper 2 is tighter on time than Paper 1. If a 6-mark question is halfway through the paper, budget your time accordingly. A well-structured 6-point answer that addresses the question directly is better than a 12-point essay that rambles.
  • Confusing "suggest" with "state." "Suggest" means the exam is asking you to apply your knowledge to something new. There may not be a single right answer. Marks are given for reasonable scientific reasoning, not for quoting the specification.
  • Not checking units in calculations. Paper 2 calculations often involve converting between units (cm3 to dm3, joules to kilojoules). A correct method with incorrect unit conversion still loses the final answer mark.
