Secondly, this award is a powerful encouragement to me and to every diligent student. It proves that hard work does not go unnoticed and that honest effort is rewarded. From today, I am inspired to study even harder so as to justify the confidence reposed in me.

Write a story that ends with the statement: Better late than never.
Tunde was, by common agreement, the most gifted pupil in our set, but he was also the laziest. Blessed with a sharp mind, he despised hard work and spent his days boasting that he could pass any examination without opening a book. While the rest of us burned the midnight oil, he lounged about, laughing at what he called our needless labour.
The day of reckoning came with our final examinations. For the first time, cleverness alone was not enough. The papers demanded thorough preparation, and Tunde, who had read nothing, sat staring at questions he could not answer. When the results were released, his name stood at the very bottom of the list, and he failed the subjects he needed most. The shock wiped the arrogant smile from his face.
For weeks he sank into gloom, and many wrote him off as a wasted talent. But Tunde was not finished. One quiet evening he came to my house, humbled and sober, and confessed that he had been a fool. He begged me to help him plan a fresh timetable, and from that day a new Tunde was born. He rose before dawn to study, joined our reading group, and asked questions he had once been too proud to ask.
The following year, he registered for the examination again. This time he prepared with a diligence that astonished us all. When the results came out, Tunde's name shone near the top, and he won admission into the university to study engineering, the very course he had almost thrown away.
Years later, now a respected engineer, he was invited to address our old school. He held up his degree before the young ones and told them his story without shame. "I nearly ruined my life through laziness and pride," he said, "but I picked myself up before it was too late. Learn from me, and remember always that it is better late than never."

Last week our school took us on a study tour to a large farm settlement and a nearby factory. Believe me, Ada, I learnt more in those two days than I sometimes learn in a whole term. The first lesson I carried home is the dignity of labour. Watching the farmers and factory workers toil cheerfully, I realised that no honest work is beneath anyone and that real wealth is earned through patient effort.
Secondly, I learnt the value of teamwork. On the assembly line, each worker did a small task, yet the smooth cooperation of everyone produced finished goods with amazing speed. It taught me that great things are achieved when people work together rather than alone.
The excursion also opened my eyes to the practical side of what we study in class. The chemistry and biology that once seemed dull suddenly came alive as I saw them at work in fertilisers, crops and machines. I now understand why our teachers insist that education must be linked to real life.
Above all, the trip taught me the importance of discipline and time. Everything at the factory ran by the clock, and the slightest lateness disrupted the whole process. I have resolved, from now on, to guard my time jealously and to be more orderly in all that I do.

CURBING THE RISING TIDE OF INDISCIPLINE AMONG OUR YOUTH
The many articles recently published on the alarming rate of indiscipline among the youth of this country have moved me to add my own voice. Indiscipline, that is, the wilful disregard for rules, elders and decent conduct, has indeed become a plague that threatens the very future of our nation, and it must be confronted with courage and honesty.
The signs are everywhere. Examination malpractice, cultism, drug abuse, rudeness to elders, indecent dressing and the reckless craving for quick wealth have become common among young people. What was once a matter of shame is now openly paraded, and those who counsel restraint are dismissed as old-fashioned.
Several factors are responsible for this decline. The first is poor upbringing. Many parents, absorbed in the pursuit of money, have surrendered the training of their children to housemaids and television, and so the young grow up without moral guidance. Secondly, the mass media and social networks glorify violence, vulgar wealth and loose living, presenting these as the ideal way of life. Thirdly, the failure of society to reward hard work and to punish wrongdoing has convinced many youths that discipline does not pay.
Yet the situation is not beyond repair. Parents must return to their God-given duty of moulding the character of their children by precept and by example. Schools, on their part, should revive moral instruction and firmly but fairly enforce their rules. The government and the media must promote wholesome values and honour men and women of integrity so that the young may have worthy models to follow. Above all, wrongdoing must attract just punishment, so that indiscipline ceases to appear profitable.
Indiscipline is not an incurable disease. If home, school, government and society join hands, the tide can be turned, and our youths can be raised into responsible citizens on whom the hopes of the nation may safely rest. The task is urgent, and the time to begin is now.

I write to express my deep concern over the sharp increase in cases of malaria in recent times, and to suggest some measures that may help to curb this dangerous disease.
From my own observation, malaria has become distressingly common in both towns and villages. Hospital wards are crowded with patients, many of them little children, and a good number of the deaths recorded in our communities are traceable to it. The disease has kept workers away from their duties and pupils away from school, and has drained the meagre income of poor families spent on drugs and treatment.
The causes are not far to seek. Stagnant water in gutters, discarded tins and abandoned containers provide breeding grounds for mosquitoes, while heaps of refuse and overgrown bushes surround many homes. Worse still, a large number of people cannot afford treated nets or proper medical care.
In the light of this, I humbly suggest the following remedies. First, the government should embark on a vigorous public enlightenment campaign to teach citizens how to keep their surroundings clean and to clear stagnant water and bushes where mosquitoes breed. Secondly, insecticide-treated mosquito nets should be produced and distributed free, or at highly subsidised rates, especially to pregnant women and children. Thirdly, antimalarial drugs and testing should be made available and affordable in all government hospitals and health centres. In addition, periodic fumigation of towns and villages would greatly reduce the mosquito population.
I am persuaded that, if these measures are earnestly pursued, the scourge of malaria will be brought under control and countless lives will be saved. I look forward to your prompt and favourable action.
