Studio Photography
Aperçu
A studio is an empty room. That is the whole point of it and also the whole difficulty. Nothing is given to you: no weather, no light, no background, no accident. Every single thing that appears in the photograph has to be carried in, positioned and switched on by somebody, and if the picture is dull there is nobody else to blame.
This note is about working in that room. It covers what a studio actually is and how to improvise one, the standard lighting positions and what each does to a face or an object, backgrounds, props and posing, the discipline of the lighting plan, and how to make a set of studio images that shows testing rather than one lucky frame. Location photography is the companion area of study and it works the opposite way round, by negotiating with what is already there.
Objectifs
- Use a formal studio setting to control the environment for a variety of subject matters such as portraiture and still life
- Use a range of studio photography materials, tools and techniques such as lighting and the use of light, props, posing and the arrangement of objects
