AO1 Knowledge

AO1 asks you to show that you really know your texts: the plot, the characters and the situations of the drama, poetry and prose you have studied, and to back up every claim with reference to the words on the page. It is the foundation every other skill stands on. You cannot analyse a writer's method, or weigh a character's feelings, if you cannot remember what actually happens and who says what to whom.
This note shows you the difference between vague knowledge and supported knowledge, why a precise embedded reference beats a long retelling of the plot, and how to revise so your recall stays accurate under exam pressure. Every model here uses out-of-copyright writing, so you can study the technique without depending on any one set text.
