Walk through an airport anywhere in the world and you will see the same coffee chains, the same phone brands and the same handful of blockbuster films advertised on the walls. That sameness has a name: global culture, the spread of shared foods, languages, media and fashion to almost every country on earth. But step outside that airport and the picture gets more complicated fast, because plenty of communities actively push back against it, and plenty of governments have found ways to turn their own culture into an economic asset rather than letting it be replaced.
In this lesson you will examine how a global culture has grown, why some countries and communities resist it, and how protecting or promoting national culture can become a deliberate strategy for economic development.
Objectifs
- Growth towards a global culture, including increased worldwide adoption of common foods, languages, media and fashion
- The rejection of globalised cultural change, including national identity and resistance against the spread of global culture, using two countries as examples
- The protection and promotion of national culture as an economic development strategy, using one country as an example
