Once your research is in, you will have more than one opinion in front of you, and some of it will disagree with itself. That is not a problem to tidy away. Almost every real citizenship issue is contested: reasonable people looking at the same facts reach different conclusions, because they weigh the costs and benefits differently or because the issue affects them in different ways.
This lesson teaches you how to represent your own opinion honestly while also representing the views of people who disagree with you fairly, how to judge which evidence is genuinely more compelling rather than just more comfortable, and how to state a case without pretending the argument is one-sided. The running example is a proposal for a new pedestrian crossing outside a primary school, a small local decision with real disagreement on every side.
Objectifs
- Show understanding of the issue, including their own opinions and the views and perspectives of different people
- Review the evidence and research undertaken and the different viewpoints expressed, and consider why some evidence or viewpoints may be more compelling or persuasive than others
- Consider the different viewpoints and communicate the case for what they think should happen
