Speaking: Communicate And Interact In Speech

Aperçu

The Speaking test is the one component that is not a written exam. It is non-exam assessment: about ten minutes of talk, conducted and audio-recorded by your own teacher in your own school, and then marked by an examiner who was not in the room. It is worth 40 marks and 20 per cent of the qualification, and there is no question paper to revise from because the materials are confidential until the test window opens.

What there is, and what this lesson is built on, is a precisely described structure and a set of published expectations. Two parts: a photocard with three prescribed questions, then a General conversation on the themes the photocard did not use. Ten minutes of supervised preparation before it, in which you may write unlimited notes. Four assessment areas that the specification names. This lesson works through all of it, including what to do with those ten minutes, how to keep talking when a question surprises you, and one answer built three times so you can hear what improves.

Objectifs

  1. In order to meet the requirements of AO4, students are expected to:
  2. communicate and interact effectively in speech for a variety of purposes, using and adapting language appropriately
  3. develop skills in conversation by responding to questions and exchanging opinions
  4. convey information and narrate events coherently and confidently, using and adapting language for new purposes
  5. speak spontaneously, responding to unexpected questions, points of view or situations, sustaining communication as appropriate
  6. initiate and develop conversations and discussion, producing extended sequences of speech
  7. make appropriate and accurate use of a variety of vocabulary and grammatical structures, including some more complex forms, with reference to past, present and future events
  8. make creative and more complex use of the language, as appropriate, to express and justify their own thoughts and points of view
  9. use accurate pronunciation and intonation to be understood by a native speaker.

Note de cours

The Speaking test is a non-exam assessment lasting about 10 minutes, preceded by 10 minutes of supervised preparation time. It carries 40 marks, which is 20 per cent of the qualification, exactly the same weight as the Listening paper. It is conducted and audio-recorded by the teacher and marked by an examiner.
