Sustainability At A Local, National And Global Level

Aperçu

A charge on plastic bags cuts their use by most of what was there before in one country and barely moves the number in another. A community forest scheme regenerates a hillside in one valley and is quietly ignored in the next one. Identical ideas, opposite results, and the difference is almost never the idea. It is whether the conditions that idea needs were present, and whether the people who had to change anything were involved in deciding it.

This lesson covers the two things the specification names here: the different methods and approaches to sustainability, with the reasons some succeed and some fail, and the current challenges and opportunities at global and national level and inside your own local area. You will meet eight distinct approaches and the assumption each one rests on, learn seven ways they characteristically fail, and work out which level a school group can actually reach, which matters because your action has to be delivered to a real audience and evaluated against goals you set.

Objectifs

  1. Different methods and approaches to sustainability and reasons for successes and failures.
  2. Current challenges and opportunities for sustainability at global and national levels and within the students’ local area.

Note de cours

Two neighbouring districts install identical public water points to reduce the sale of bottled water. Eighteen months later one district's points are working and busy, and the other's are dry, vandalised or fenced off. Nothing about the technology differed. In the first district a residents' committee holds a small maintenance fund and a named person has the key; in the second the installation was funded by a grant that covered the pipes and nothing afterwards.
