Formal Writing: Articles, Reports And Reviews
Aperçu
The formal writing task is the most demanding piece of writing on the paper. You are asked to produce an article, a report or a review for a wider reader, on a topic you may not have chosen, and to develop a clear point of view in a controlled, more formal register. Two short prompts are given to start your thinking, but the best answers go well beyond them.
This lesson teaches the differences between the three forms, how to strike a register that is more neutral and formal than a friendly email, and how to build a balanced, well-organised argument. You will see a weaker and a stronger version side by side, and a full article marked for both its content and its language.

- Organise the response to suit the form, purpose and intended reader.
- Develop a point of view with reasons, examples and a clear conclusion.
