Who Was To Blame For The Cold War?

In 1945 the United States and the Soviet Union had just won the Second World War as allies. Within three years they were rivals on the edge of conflict, with Europe split by what Churchill called an iron curtain. How did wartime partners become Cold War enemies so quickly? Was it Soviet expansion into Eastern Europe, or American attempts to contain communism with money and alliances, that turned suspicion into a forty-year stand-off?
This lesson traces the breakdown from the Yalta and Potsdam conferences of 1945, through the Truman Doctrine and Marshall Plan, to the Berlin Blockade and the birth of NATO and the Warsaw Pact. You will weigh the orthodox view that blames the USSR against the revisionist view that blames the United States, and learn how to build the balanced judgement that Cambridge examiners reward.
