Smart, Modern And Alternative Materials

Some materials do not just sit there - they respond. A mug that changes colour when hot coffee is poured in, a pair of spectacle lenses that darken in sunlight, a metal wire that remembers its shape and springs back when warmed: these are smart materials, whose properties change in a useful, reversible way when something in their environment changes. Alongside them sit modern and alternative materials such as graphene, Kevlar and bamboo that are reshaping what designers can make.
This note develops the 0445 Materials-option awareness of smart, modern and alternative materials: the chromic materials that change colour with heat, light or water; polymorph, the polymer you can mould by hand; shape memory alloys and polymers that remember a form; biopolymers and bamboo as renewable alternatives; and the high-performance modern materials graphene, Kevlar and metal foam. Each is explained with the trigger it responds to and a real product it makes possible.
Objectifs
- develop an awareness and understanding of smart, modern and alternative materials, for example: - thermochromic materials - photochromic materials - hydrochromic materials - polymorph - shape memory alloys (SMA) - shape memory polymers (SMP) - biopolymers - bamboo - graphene - Kevlar® - metal foam.
