Responding To Anthology Poems
Aperçu
Sixteen poems, written across more than four hundred years, by poets from Britain, the Caribbean, India, the United States and the Gujarati diaspora. A Renaissance sonnet about constancy sits beside a burst water pipe in a modern Indian city. A Victorian duke displaying a portrait of the wife he probably had killed sits beside a child kept behind after school who has not yet learned to tell the time.
These are your set texts, and Section B of Component 1 will ask you to write about two of them. The poems are printed in the exam paper, so this is not a memory test. It is a test of whether you know these particular poems well enough to have something of your own to say about them under pressure. This note shows you how to build that knowledge poem by poem, and what a genuine response looks like on the page.

- Demonstrate understanding of how writers create literary effects using imagery, descriptive skills, language choice, tone and mood, structure and form
