Farm Water Supplies
Aperçu
No crop grows and no animal thrives without water, yet rain rarely falls when and where a farm needs it. A reliable water supply, clean enough to drink and stored against the dry season, is one of the foundations of a productive farm. Get it wrong and stock go thirsty, milk yields fall and disease spreads through dirty drinking water; get it right and the farm keeps working through the driest months.
In this lesson you will learn where farm water comes from, for people, for livestock and for irrigation, and how to make it safe by settling and filtration. You will see how a storage dam is built to hold back water that pushes harder the deeper it gets, and how water is then stored in tanks and piped around the farm, down to fixing a leaking tap with a new washer.
Objectifs
- (a) list suitable sources of water for human consumption, for livestock and for irrigation.
- (b) outline methods of water treatment by settling and filtration.
- (c) outline suitable methods of construction of storage dams to resist water pressure, which increases with depth.
- (d) describe the use of storage tanks, the distribution of water through pipe systems and simple plumbing, sufficient for maintaining a plastic pipe system, including pipe-joining and fitting of tap washers.
