Home and abroad is one of the five theme areas in the Edexcel IGCSE (4SP1) Spanish specification, and it covers some of the most practical, real-world language you will need. If you can navigate a conversation about your town, book a hotel, ask for directions and describe cultural traditions in Spanish, you are well prepared for a significant portion of both Paper 2 and the speaking exam.

This article provides edexcel igcse spanish revision notes for the entire Home and abroad theme area. It covers all five topics within the section, walks through the vocabulary and grammar structures you need, highlights the common mistakes that lose marks, and finishes with self-check practice questions. If you are searching for edexcel igcse spanish home and abroad resources, this is your starting point for igcse 4sp1 home and abroad preparation.

Life in the town and rural life

This topic requires you to describe where you live, compare town and country environments, and express preferences about different living situations. The vocabulary falls into two broad categories: features of your local area and opinions about those features.

Key vocabulary

SpanishEnglishUsage note
el pueblovillage / small townMasculine noun; do not confuse with "el publico" (the public)
la ciudadcityFeminine noun; "en la ciudad" = in the city
el campocountrysideAlso means "field" in some contexts
el barrioneighbourhoodUseful for describing your local area
ruidoso/anoisyAdjective, must agree: "la ciudad es ruidosa"
tranquilo/aquiet / peaceful"El campo es tranquilo"
el transporte publicopublic transportKey for comparing town and country
las tiendasshops"Hay muchas tiendas" = there are many shops

When describing your town for a writing or speaking task, go beyond simple lists. Instead of writing "Hay tiendas y restaurantes," extend it: "En mi ciudad hay muchas tiendas y restaurantes, pero lo que mas me gusta es el parque porque es muy tranquilo." That single sentence uses a range of structures (hay, lo que, me gusta, porque) and demonstrates the ability to give opinions, which pushes your response into higher mark bands.

Grammar focus: comparatives

Comparing town and country life is a natural place to use comparative structures. The pattern is straightforward: mas + adjective + que (more ... than) or menos + adjective + que (less ... than).

  • La ciudad es mas ruidosa que el campo. (The city is noisier than the countryside.)
  • El campo es menos contaminado que la ciudad. (The countryside is less polluted than the city.)
  • Watch for the irregular comparatives: mejor (better), peor (worse), mayor (older/bigger), menor (younger/smaller).

Holidays, tourist information and directions

This is one of the most versatile topics in the home and abroad edexcel igcse theme. Holiday vocabulary appears in listening comprehension, reading passages, writing tasks and speaking role-plays. You need vocabulary for travel, accommodation, activities and problems.

Key vocabulary

SpanishEnglishUsage note
las vacacionesholidaysAlways plural in Spanish
el alojamientoaccommodationCovers hotels, hostels, camping
una habitacion doblea double room"Quisiera reservar una habitacion doble"
la playabeach"Fuimos a la playa" = we went to the beach
el vueloflight"El vuelo sale a las diez" = the flight leaves at ten
tomar el solto sunbatheReflexive in some regions
a la derecha / izquierdato the right / leftEssential for directions
todo recto / todo derechostraight aheadBoth forms are acceptable

Directions questions are common in the speaking role-play. You might need to ask "Donde esta la estacion?" or give directions to a tourist. Practise the imperative forms: "Siga todo recto, gire a la derecha y la estacion esta a la izquierda."

Grammar focus: the preterite tense

Holidays are past events, so the preterite tense is essential here. You should be able to conjugate regular -ar, -er and -ir verbs in the preterite, plus the key irregulars: ir/ser (fui, fuiste, fue...), hacer (hice, hiciste, hizo...), and estar (estuve, estuviste, estuvo...).

A strong exam response about holidays will combine the preterite with the imperfect to show both completed actions and background descriptions: "El verano pasado fui a Barcelona. Hacia mucho sol y el hotel era fantastico. Visite la Sagrada Familia y comi paella." This kind of tense interplay is exactly what the edexcel igcse spanish explained criteria reward in the higher mark bands.

Services

This topic covers everyday transactions at places like banks, post offices, lost property offices and similar establishments. It is practical, transactional language: the kind you would need if you were actually in a Spanish-speaking country and needed to get something done.

Key phrases

  • Quisiera cambiar dinero. (I would like to change money.)
  • He perdido mi cartera. (I have lost my wallet.)
  • Necesito enviar una carta. (I need to send a letter.)
  • Donde esta la comisaria? (Where is the police station?)
  • Puede ayudarme? (Can you help me?)

These phrases use the conditional (quisiera), the perfect tense (he perdido), the present (necesito), and interrogative structures. Using a variety of structures even in short transactional exchanges demonstrates range and earns marks.

Customs

This topic requires you to understand and discuss cultural practices in Spanish-speaking communities. You should be able to describe customs, compare them with your own culture, and express opinions about them.

Think about festivals like La Tomatina, Las Fallas, Dia de los Muertos, Semana Santa and La Navidad. You do not need encyclopaedic knowledge of every festival, but you should be able to describe one or two in enough detail to sustain a short paragraph or a conversation turn.

Useful structures for discussing customs

  • En Espana, es costumbre + infinitive. (In Spain, it is customary to...)
  • A diferencia de mi pais, en Mexico... (Unlike my country, in Mexico...)
  • Lo que me parece interesante es que... (What I find interesting is that...)
  • Me gustaria participar en... porque... (I would like to take part in... because...)

These structures let you give opinions and make comparisons, both of which are assessed in the edexcel igcse spanish practice questions and writing tasks for this theme area.

Everyday life, traditions and communities

This is the broadest topic within the theme. It covers daily routines in Spanish-speaking countries, the role of traditions in community life, and how these compare across cultures. In the exam, this topic blends with the others; a reading passage about a family celebrating a traditional meal, for example, touches on customs, food and drink, and daily routines simultaneously.

Grammar focus: the imperfect tense

Describing traditions and routines naturally calls for the imperfect tense, which expresses habitual or repeated actions in the past. The imperfect is more regular than the preterite: -ar verbs take -aba endings (hablaba, hablabas, hablaba...) and -er/-ir verbs take -ia endings (comia, comias, comia...).

Only three verbs are irregular in the imperfect: ser (era), ir (iba) and ver (veia). That makes it one of the easiest tenses to learn and one of the most rewarding to use in the exam, because it immediately signals that you can handle past-tense narration.

The opinion upgrade. Adding an opinion to any factual description lifts your response. Instead of "En Espana, la gente cena a las diez," write "En Espana, la gente cena a las diez, lo cual me parece muy tarde pero es parte de su cultura." The second version shows comprehension, opinion and cultural awareness in a single sentence.

Common mistakes in this theme area

  • Confusing por and para. Both can translate as "for," but por indicates cause or exchange ("Gracias por tu ayuda") while para indicates purpose or destination ("Es para ti"). Getting these wrong changes the meaning of your sentence.
  • Forgetting accents on preterite forms. In written tasks, missing the accent on "visite" versus "visite" (I visited vs. visit!) can confuse meaning. Pay attention to accent marks, especially on first and third person preterite forms.
  • Using ser instead of estar for location. "La estacion es en el centro" is wrong. "La estacion esta en el centro" is correct. Location uses estar, not ser.
  • Translating word-for-word from English. "I am hot" is "Tengo calor" (literally, I have heat), not "Soy caliente" (which has an entirely different meaning). Spanish and English structure many common expressions differently.

Self-check: edexcel igcse spanish practice questions

Test yourself on these questions. Write your answers in Spanish, then check them against the vocabulary and grammar covered in these edexcel igcse spanish notes.

  1. Describe tu ciudad o pueblo. Incluye al menos tres cosas que hay y una opinion. (Describe your town or village. Include at least three things there are and an opinion.)
  2. Escribe un parrafo sobre tus vacaciones del ano pasado. Usa el preterito y el imperfecto. (Write a paragraph about your holidays last year. Use the preterite and imperfect.)
  3. Explica como llegar desde tu casa hasta el supermercado mas cercano. (Explain how to get from your house to the nearest supermarket.)
  4. Describe una costumbre o tradicion de un pais hispanohablante que te interese. (Describe a custom or tradition from a Spanish-speaking country that interests you.)

If you can answer all four confidently, you have a strong grip on this theme. If any of them made you hesitate, go back to the relevant vocabulary table or grammar section and work through it again. That is how edexcel igcse revision works best: identify the gap, fill it, then test again. Consistent practice with real exam-style questions is the fastest way to build the vocabulary and grammar confidence you need for every part of the Home and abroad theme in the Edexcel IGCSE Spanish specification.
