The nature and variety of living organisms is the opening section of the biology paper in the Edexcel IGCSE Science Double Award (4SD0). It covers two topics: the characteristics of living organisms and the variety of living organisms. The content is not enormous, but it sets the vocabulary and classification framework that the rest of the biology specification depends on. The most common exam mistake here is confusing excretion with egestion. Excretion is the removal of metabolic waste, meaning substances produced by chemical reactions inside cells. Carbon dioxide and urea are excretory products. Egestion is the removal of undigested food from the body (faeces), which was never part of the body's metabolism. The edexcel specification tests this distinction directly.

Exam tip: If the question asks you to list the characteristics of living organisms, do not write "eating" or "breathing." Use the correct biological terms: nutrition, respiration, excretion, response, movement, homeostasis, reproduction, growth and development. Examiners look for precise vocabulary.

Variety of living organisms: eukaryotes and prokaryotes

The second topic in this section is about classifying organisms. The edexcel igcse science double award explained simply, this comes down to two big categories and then subdivisions within one of them.

All organisms are either eukaryotic (cells with a nucleus enclosed in a membrane) or prokaryotic (cells without a true nucleus). Eukaryotes include plants, animals, fungi and protoctists. Prokaryotes include bacteria.

Prokaryotic organisms

Bacteria are prokaryotic. Their cells are smaller than eukaryotic cells and have the following features: a cell wall (but not made of cellulose), a cell membrane, cytoplasm, plasmids (small rings of DNA), and genetic material (DNA) that is not enclosed in a nucleus. They do not have mitochondria or chloroplasts, though some can photosynthesise using other structures.

Viruses

Viruses are not classified as living organisms because they do not carry out the seven life processes independently. They can only reproduce inside a host cell. A virus particle consists of a protein coat surrounding a core of genetic material (DNA or RNA). They are much smaller than bacteria.

Pathogens

The specification requires you to understand the term pathogen and know that pathogens can include fungi, bacteria, protoctists and viruses. A pathogen is an organism or agent that causes disease.

  • Bacteria: Salmonella causes food poisoning. Tuberculosis (TB) is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
  • Viruses: Influenza virus causes flu. HIV causes AIDS.
  • Protoctists: Plasmodium causes malaria. It is transmitted by mosquitoes.
  • Fungi: Athlete's foot is caused by a fungus that grows on the skin.

The key exam point here is that not all bacteria, fungi or protoctists are pathogens. Most are harmless or beneficial. But the specification specifically asks you to know that each of these groups can include pathogens.

Common mistakes that cost marks

Working through igcse 4sd0 biology: the nature and variety of living organisms, students consistently lose marks on the same points.

  • Saying viruses are living organisms. They are not. They cannot respire, feed or reproduce independently. They need a host cell.
  • Confusing chitin with cellulose. Fungal cell walls are made of chitin. Plant cell walls are made of cellulose. These are different substances, and naming the wrong one loses the mark.
  • Listing egestion as excretion. Undigested food leaving the body through the anus is egestion, not excretion. Excretion involves waste from metabolic reactions.
  • Forgetting that protoctists include both plant-like and animal-like organisms. Some photosynthesise, others feed heterotrophically. Plasmodium (which causes malaria) is a protoctist, not a bacterium.
  • Describing bacteria as having a nucleus. Bacteria have DNA, but it is not enclosed in a nuclear membrane. This is the defining difference between prokaryotes and eukaryotes.

How this section connects to the rest of the biology paper

In the Double Award, the biology paper covers five sections and this is the first. The classification framework you learn here comes back in several places. When you study ecology, you will need to identify organisms at different trophic levels. When you study disease and the immune system in the transport section, you will need to know what pathogens are and how white blood cells respond. Linking the three sciences

Energy, for example, runs through all three: chemical energy in bond-breaking and bond-making, kinetic energy in moving objects, and metabolic energy in respiration. When you revise a topic in one science, look for the thread that connects it to the others. A question on photosynthesis might ask about the light energy absorbed, which links to the physics of the electromagnetic spectrum. A question on rates of reaction might reference enzymes, which links to biological catalysts. These cross-disciplinary connections are not accidental; the specification is designed to reward students who can think across boundaries.

Examiners value precise scientific language. "The particles move faster" is weaker than "the particles have greater kinetic energy, so a higher proportion exceed the activation energy on collision." Each additional technical term, used correctly, signals understanding rather than guesswork, and that distinction is what separates a grade 5 answer from a grade 7.

Revision tip: After finishing a topic in one science, write a single sentence connecting it to each of the other two. If you cannot, that gap is worth revisiting. The strongest Double Award candidates are the ones who see the three sciences as one interconnected system rather than three separate subjects that happen to share an exam.
