"Draw" or "Construct": Use a pencil, ruler and compasses. Construction arcs must be visible. If the question says "use ruler and compasses," a freehand drawing scores zero. Leave all construction lines on the page; erasing them can cost marks.

"Estimate": Round each value to 1 significant figure first, then calculate. The point is to show you can simplify a calculation to get an approximate answer. Using exact values defeats the purpose and may not earn the method mark.

Geometry and trigonometry: Label all sides and angles on diagrams before calculating. State which formula or theorem you are using (Pythagoras, sine rule, cosine rule, area = 1/2 ab sin C). On Higher tier, circle theorem questions require you to name the theorem used; "the angle is 90" without stating "angle in a semicircle" loses the reasoning mark.

Statistics and probability: When calculating a mean from grouped data, use the midpoint of each class interval. For probability tree diagrams, multiply along branches and add between branches. Always check that probabilities in a complete set sum to 1.
