Stop Losing Easy Marks

Every year, Environmental Management candidates walk out of the exam thinking they've done well. Then the results arrive, and the marks don't match the effort. The reason is almost never a lack of knowledge. It's avoidable mistakes. Repeatable, predictable errors that show up in candidate after candidate, paper after paper.

This is your checklist of the biggest mark-killers in the Cambridge IGCSE Environmental Management (0680) exam. For each one, you'll see exactly what goes wrong, why the examiner can't give you credit for it, and what to do instead.

Mistake 1: Ignoring the Command Word

This is the single biggest source of lost marks across all IGCSE papers, and Environmental Management is no exception.

Here's what happens. A question says "Explain why deforestation leads to soil erosion." The student writes: "Deforestation leads to soil erosion." That's a statement. It's not an explanation. Zero marks.

Tip: Circle the command word before you start writing. Every single time. Make it a physical habit. If you do nothing else from this article, do this.

Mistake 2: Vague Answers on Biodiversity and Ecosystems

Questions on managing biodiversity and ecosystems are high-value. They appear in extended response sections worth 6 to 8 marks. And students throw away marks by being vague.

The Wrong Approach

"Cutting down trees is bad for biodiversity because animals lose their homes."

Why It Loses Marks

"Animals" is too general. "Homes" is not a scientific term. There's no chain of reasoning. The mark scheme wants specific mechanisms and specific consequences.

The Correct Approach

"Deforestation destroys the habitats of species that depend on forest ecosystems, such as canopy-dwelling birds and primates. This reduces population sizes and may lead to local extinction. The loss of one species can disrupt food webs, for example, if a pollinator is lost, the plants it pollinates may also decline, reducing food availability for herbivores further along the food chain."

See the difference? Specific organisms. Scientific vocabulary. A chain of cause and effect. That's what the examiner is marking against.

Exam Note: The mark scheme for IGCSE Environmental Management biodiversity questions almost always rewards named examples. "A named species" or "a named ecosystem" can be the difference between 4/6 and 6/6. Keep a mental bank of examples: coral reefs for marine biodiversity, tropical rainforests for terrestrial biodiversity, mangroves for coastal protection.

Do / Don't Checklist for Biodiversity Questions

  • Do name specific species or ecosystem types where possible
  • Do use terms like habitat, niche, food web, population, conservation, endemic
  • Do connect causes to consequences in a logical chain
  • Don't write "animals" when you mean "species" or a specific organism
  • Don't write "homes" when you mean "habitats"
  • Don't stop at one point when the question is worth multiple marks

Mistake 3: Botching Calculations and Data Interpretation

Environmental Management papers regularly include data-response questions. Graphs, tables, percentage changes, rate calculations. Students make two types of errors here: arithmetic mistakes, and failing to show working.

Arithmetic Mistakes

The most common calculation error is the percentage change formula. Students either divide by the wrong number or forget the formula entirely.

The formula: percentage change = ((new value - original value) / original value) x 100

Example: Fish population drops from 1200 to 780. What is the percentage decrease?

Wrong answer: (1200 - 780) / 1200 = 0.35, so "35% increase." The student got the arithmetic right but called it an increase. Marks lost.

Correct answer: ((780 - 1200) / 1200) x 100 = -35%. The population decreased by 35%.

Tip: Always show your working, even if the question doesn't explicitly ask for it. If your final answer is wrong but your method is correct, you can still pick up method marks. A bare wrong number gets zero.

Data Interpretation Errors

When given a graph or table, students often describe the general trend but miss the specific detail the question asks for. If a question says "Using the data, describe the change in carbon dioxide concentration between 1990 and 2010," you need to quote actual values from the graph. "It went up" is not enough. "CO2 concentration increased from 354 ppm in 1990 to 390 ppm in 2010, an increase of 36 ppm" is what scores.

Mistake 4: Incomplete Answers on Food Production and Crop Yield

Food production is a major topic in the syllabus, and questions often ask about methods to increase yield or the environmental consequences of intensive farming. Students lose marks by writing half an answer.

Common Incomplete Answer

Question: "Explain two ways in which the use of chemical fertilisers can harm the environment." [4 marks]

Student writes: "Fertilisers can pollute rivers. Fertilisers can cause eutrophication."

That's two points, but each one is only half-developed. The mark scheme allocates 2 marks per point: one for identifying the problem and one for explaining the mechanism.

Full-Mark Answer

"Excess fertiliser is washed off fields by rainwater into rivers and lakes (runoff). This causes eutrophication: the nutrients stimulate rapid growth of algae on the water surface (algal bloom), which blocks sunlight from reaching submerged plants. When the algae die, decomposing bacteria consume large amounts of dissolved oxygen, reducing the oxygen available for fish and other aquatic organisms, leading to their death."

"Nitrate fertilisers can leach through the soil into groundwater supplies. If nitrate concentrations in drinking water become too high, this poses a health risk to humans, particularly infants."

Each point: identify + explain mechanism + state consequence. That is the pattern the mark scheme rewards.

Mistake 5: Confusing Energy Resource Types

Energy resources questions are reliable mark-earners if you know the material. But students routinely mix up categories and miss key distinctions.

The Three Confusions That Cost Marks

  1. Renewable vs non-renewable. Solar, wind, hydroelectric, geothermal, tidal, and biomass are renewable. Coal, oil, natural gas, and nuclear (uranium is finite) are non-renewable. Students occasionally place nuclear in the renewable category because it doesn't produce CO2 during generation. Wrong. Uranium is a finite resource that must be mined.
  2. Primary vs secondary energy. Crude oil is a primary energy source. Electricity is a secondary energy source (it must be generated from something else). Students who write "electricity is a renewable energy source" lose marks immediately.
  3. Environmental impact vs carbon emissions. Hydroelectric power produces no carbon emissions during operation, but constructing a large dam floods habitats, displaces communities, and disrupts river ecosystems. "Clean energy" does not mean "no environmental impact." The mark scheme punishes students who treat these as the same thing.
Exam Note: When an IGCSE question asks you to "evaluate" an energy source, you must give both advantages and disadvantages, then reach a conclusion. A one-sided answer - no matter how detailed - cannot score full marks on an evaluate question.

Mistake 6: Weak Climate Change Answers

Climate change is the most frequently examined topic in Environmental Management. It appears in nearly every paper. And yet, students keep making the same errors.

Error: Confusing the Greenhouse Effect with the Enhanced Greenhouse Effect

The natural greenhouse effect keeps Earth warm enough for life. Without it, average temperatures would be around -18 degrees Celsius. The enhanced greenhouse effect is the additional warming caused by human-produced greenhouse gases (CO2, methane, nitrous oxide, CFCs). Students who write "the greenhouse effect is bad" or "the greenhouse effect is caused by humans" lose marks. The greenhouse effect is natural and essential. The problem is the enhancement.

Error: Generic Consequences

"Climate change will cause flooding" is not enough. Specify the mechanism: "Rising global temperatures cause thermal expansion of seawater and melting of land-based ice sheets, raising sea levels and increasing the risk of coastal flooding in low-lying areas such as Bangladesh and small island developing states."

Error: Forgetting Adaptation vs Mitigation

Questions regularly ask about strategies to deal with climate change, and the mark scheme distinguishes between these two categories:

  • Mitigation = reducing the causes. Examples: switching to renewable energy, reducing deforestation, improving energy efficiency, carbon capture.
  • Adaptation = adjusting to the effects. Examples: building sea walls, developing drought-resistant crops, improving flood defences, relocating communities from vulnerable areas.

If a question asks for "strategies to reduce the effects of climate change," it's asking about adaptation. If it asks for "strategies to reduce climate change," it's asking about mitigation. Mixing them up means your answer doesn't match the question.

Mistake 7: Poor Time Management

This isn't a knowledge problem. It's a strategy problem. And it kills grades.

The Time Allocation Rule

IGCSE Environmental Management papers are structured so that 1 mark equals roughly 1 minute. A 4-mark question deserves about 4 minutes. A 6-mark question deserves about 6 minutes. Students who spend 15 minutes crafting a perfect answer to a 4-mark question have stolen time from other questions that may be worth more.

Tip: If you have 5 minutes left and an unanswered 6-mark question, write six bullet points instead of two polished paragraphs. Bullet points with correct content still score. A blank page scores zero.

Mistake 8: Ignoring the Resource Material

Environmental Management papers come loaded with resource material: maps, photographs, data tables, graphs, case studies. The examiners put them there for a reason. When a question says "Using the information in Fig. 3," you must reference Fig. 3 in your answer. Students who answer from memory without engaging with the resource are capped on marks.

Practical approach:

  1. Read the resource before reading the questions.
  2. Annotate it. Circle key data points, underline trends, note anomalies.
  3. When you write your answer, explicitly reference data from the resource. "Fig. 3 shows that deforestation rates increased from 12,000 km2 in 2005 to 18,500 km2 in 2015" is the kind of sentence that scores.

Mistake 9: One-Sided Evaluation Answers

"Evaluate" and "discuss" questions require balance. An answer that lists only advantages of nuclear power, or only disadvantages of dam construction, cannot access the top mark band regardless of quality.

Structure That Works

  1. State 2-3 advantages with brief explanations
  2. State 2-3 disadvantages with brief explanations
  3. Write a concluding judgement that weighs the evidence ("Overall, while solar energy has high initial costs, the long-term environmental and economic benefits make it a more sustainable choice for countries with high levels of sunlight.")

That final judgement is where the top marks live. Students who skip it leave marks on the table every time.

Mistake 10: Ecosystem Questions Without Named Examples

Ecosystem questions are an opportunity to demonstrate real understanding. But too many candidates write in abstractions.

"Deforestation affects the ecosystem" scores less than "Deforestation in the Amazon rainforest reduces biodiversity by destroying the habitat of species such as the jaguar and harpy eagle, and disrupts the water cycle because fewer trees means less transpiration and therefore reduced local rainfall."

The mark scheme for IGCSE Environmental Management ecosystem questions frequently contains the phrase "accept any appropriate named example." This is the examiner telling you: give me a name, and I'll give you a mark.

Your Named-Example Bank

  • Tropical rainforest: Amazon (deforestation, biodiversity loss, carbon release)
  • Coral reef: Great Barrier Reef (bleaching, ocean acidification, tourism impact)
  • Wetland: Everglades or Sundarbans (water filtration, flood control, habitat)
  • Desert: Sahel region (desertification, overgrazing, drought)
  • Marine: North Sea or Grand Banks (overfishing, trawling damage)
Exam Note: You don't need dozens of examples. Five or six well-known case studies that you can apply flexibly will cover the vast majority of IGCSE Environmental Management questions. Learn them properly rather than memorising a long list superficially.

Worked Example: Spot the Mistakes

Here's a sample student answer. Read it, spot the errors, then check the corrected version below.

Question: Explain how intensive farming can lead to a loss of biodiversity. [4 marks]

Student Answer: "Intensive farming uses lots of chemicals which kill everything. Animals have nowhere to live. The environment gets destroyed."

What's wrong:

  • "Chemicals" is too vague. Pesticides? Herbicides? Fertilisers? Each has a different mechanism.
  • "Kill everything" is not scientific. Which organisms? Through what mechanism?
  • "Animals have nowhere to live" - no mention of habitat loss, hedgerow removal, or monoculture.
  • "The environment gets destroyed" - meaningless as an exam answer.

Corrected Answer: "Intensive farming relies on monoculture, removing hedgerows and field margins that provide habitats for insects, birds, and small mammals (1). Herbicides eliminate wild plant species that compete with crops, reducing plant diversity (1). Pesticides kill target pest species but can also harm non-target organisms such as pollinating insects (1). The resulting decline in insect populations reduces food availability for insectivorous birds, disrupting the food web (1)."

Four distinct points. Four marks. No wasted words.

Your Pre-Exam Checklist

Use this in the final week before your exam. Go through each point and honestly assess whether you can do it.

  1. Can you define and correctly respond to all six command words (state, describe, explain, suggest, compare, evaluate)?
  2. Can you calculate a percentage change and show your working clearly?
  3. Can you name at least one specific example for each major ecosystem type?
  4. Can you distinguish between the greenhouse effect and the enhanced greenhouse effect?
  5. Can you classify every energy source on the syllabus as renewable or non-renewable?
  6. Can you explain eutrophication as a chain of cause and effect, not just a single sentence?
  7. Can you write an evaluation with advantages, disadvantages, and a supported conclusion?
  8. Do you know the difference between mitigation and adaptation for climate change?
  9. Can you read data from a graph and quote specific figures in your answer?
  10. Have you practised at least three past papers under timed conditions?

If you answered no to any of those, you know exactly where to focus your remaining revision time. The students who score highest on IGCSE Environmental Management are not the ones who know the most. They are the ones who make the fewest avoidable mistakes. Fix the errors on this list, and your marks will improve.
