The paper at a glance

IGCSE Biology Paper 3 is the Core theory paper. It lasts one hour and fifteen minutes, carries 80 marks, and consists of short-answer and structured questions. Unlike Paper 1, where you choose from four options, Paper 3 requires you to write your own answers. That distinction changes everything about how you prepare.

The questions follow the syllabus roughly in order, starting with topics such as characteristics of living organisms and cell structure, and finishing with ecology and human influences. Each question is broken into parts, labelled (a), (b), (c) and so on, with the mark allocation printed in square brackets beside each part. A part worth [2] requires two distinct marking points. A part worth [4] requires four. This is not a suggestion; it is the scoring architecture of the paper.

As a Core candidate, you are assessed on the Core syllabus content only. Grades available range from C to G. The Supplement content tested on Paper 4 does not appear here, so you can focus your revision accordingly.

Time management: one minute per mark

The simplest and most reliable timing rule for Paper 3 is this: spend approximately one minute per mark. The paper carries 80 marks and lasts 75 minutes, which gives you just under a minute per mark with a small buffer for reading time.

Exam tip: If you have spent three minutes on a [1] question without writing anything, stop. Write your best attempt and move on. One mark is never worth three minutes of exam time when those minutes could earn you three marks elsewhere.

Build in a five-minute review period at the end. Use it to re-read your answers for the higher-mark questions, check for blank spaces, and ensure your diagrams are labelled.

Command words: the language examiners speak

Cambridge Biology uses a precise vocabulary of command words. Each word tells you exactly what type of answer the examiner expects. Using the wrong type of response for a given command word is one of the most common reasons students lose marks on Paper 3.

Exam tip: When a question says "explain," a pure description scores zero for the explanation marks. If you write what happens but not why, you leave marks on the table. Train yourself to follow every "what" with a "because."

How to structure written answers

The mark scheme for Paper 3 works on a point-based system. Each marking point is a distinct idea. Two marks means two ideas. If you write a long paragraph that contains only one idea expressed in different words, you still score one mark.

The most effective format for written answers in IGCSE Biology is one point per line. Do not bury your points inside dense paragraphs where the examiner has to hunt for them. Lay them out clearly.

A worked example

Question: Describe the process of eutrophication. [4]

Weak answer: "Eutrophication happens when fertilisers get into rivers and cause lots of algae to grow and this blocks light and the plants die and decomposers use up the oxygen and fish die."

This answer contains the right ideas but runs them together in one sentence. An examiner scanning quickly might miss a point, and the student has not demonstrated clear, structured thinking.

Strong answer:

  • Fertilisers containing nitrates and phosphates are washed into rivers or lakes.
  • The excess minerals cause rapid growth of algae on the water surface (algal bloom).
  • The algal bloom blocks light from reaching plants below the surface, so they die.
  • Decomposing bacteria break down the dead plants, using up dissolved oxygen through aerobic respiration.
  • Oxygen levels fall, causing fish and other aquatic organisms to die.

This answer has five clear points for a [4] question. Providing one extra point is a sensible safety margin in case the examiner considers one of your points too vague.

Diagram technique

Paper 3 regularly asks you to draw, label, or complete biological diagrams. The marks for diagrams are awarded with the same precision as written answers, so approach them with the same discipline.

Rules for biological drawings

  • Use a sharp pencil. Pen cannot be erased, and smudged corrections look messy and may obscure labels.
  • Draw clear, continuous lines. Do not sketch with short, feathery strokes. A single clean line represents a cell wall or membrane more accurately.
  • Label with straight, horizontal lines. Use a ruler if possible. Labels should sit outside the drawing, connected by a straight line to the exact structure they identify. Never write labels inside the drawing itself.
  • Make the drawing large enough. A tiny drawing crammed into a corner cannot show the detail the examiner is looking for. Use at least half the available space.
  • Do not shade or colour. Cambridge examiners do not award marks for shading. It wastes time and can obscure structures.
Exam tip: When a question says "label the following structures," check how many marks are available. If there are three marks and three label lines, each correct label scores one mark. Missing one label costs you a full mark. Count them before you start.

Completing diagrams

Some questions provide a partially drawn diagram and ask you to add missing parts. Before you draw anything, study the existing diagram carefully. Match the style and scale of your additions to what is already there. If the diagram shows cells at a particular magnification, your added structure should be proportionally correct.

Data interpretation questions

Paper 3 frequently presents data in tables or graphs and asks you to extract information, describe trends, or draw conclusions. These questions test your ability to read scientific data, not just your knowledge of biology.

Reading graphs

  1. Read the axes first. What is on the x-axis? What is on the y-axis? What are the units? This tells you what the graph is measuring.
  2. Identify the trend. Is the line going up, down, or staying flat? Does it change direction at any point?
  3. Use data from the graph in your answer. "The rate increases" is vague. "The rate increases from 10 to 45 units between 20 and 40 degrees Celsius" is precise and scores higher.
  4. Look for anomalies. If one data point does not fit the pattern, the examiner may ask you to identify or explain it.

Reading tables

Tables require you to compare values across rows and columns. When asked to describe a pattern, refer to specific numbers. "Group A had the highest growth" is weaker than "Group A grew by 15 mm, which was 8 mm more than Group B."

Topics that appear most frequently

While Paper 3 can test any part of the Core syllabus, certain topics consistently generate structured questions because they lend themselves to multi-step explanations:

  • Photosynthesis and respiration - equations, factors affecting rate, experimental methods
  • Enzymes - lock and key model, temperature and pH effects, denaturation
  • The heart and blood vessels - labelling the heart, describing the pathway of blood, comparing arteries and veins
  • Eutrophication - the step-by-step sequence is a favourite structured question
  • Cell structure - drawing and labelling cells, comparing plant and animal cells
  • Food tests - describing procedures and expected results
  • Gas exchange - labelling the breathing system, describing ventilation
  • Transport in plants - transpiration and factors that affect it

These topics appear not because they are weighted more heavily in the syllabus, but because they produce questions with clear, markable answer points.

Common mistakes that cost marks

  1. Writing too little for the marks available. A [3] question answered with one sentence can score at most one mark. Match the length and detail of your answer to the mark allocation.
  2. Ignoring the command word. "State" needs a fact. "Explain" needs a reason. Writing a full explanation when asked to "state" wastes time. Writing a bare fact when asked to "explain" loses marks.
  3. Using vague language. "It goes up" is weaker than "the rate of reaction increases." "Stuff moves" is weaker than "glucose is absorbed by diffusion." Examiners award marks for precise biological terminology.
  4. Confusing key terms. Respiration is a chemical reaction in cells that releases energy. Breathing is the physical movement of air in and out of the lungs. Excretion is the removal of metabolic waste. Egestion is the removal of undigested food. These mix-ups appear in mark scheme examiner reports every year.
  5. Leaving blanks. A blank answer scores zero. An attempt, even if partially correct, can pick up a mark. If a [3] question stumps you, write down whatever you can recall about the topic. You may land on a marking point without realising it.
  6. Forgetting units in calculations. A magnification answer of "x200" scores the mark. An answer of "200" without the multiplication sign or unit may not. Always include units.
  7. Messy diagram labels. Labels connected by wobbly lines that point between two structures create ambiguity. The examiner cannot award the mark if they cannot tell which structure you mean.

Using past papers effectively

Past papers are the cornerstone of IGCSE Biology revision, but for Paper 3 they serve a different purpose than for Paper 1. With MCQs, you practise speed and recognition. With theory papers, you practise written precision.

  1. Attempt the paper in exam conditions. Seventy-five minutes, no notes, no interruptions. This trains both your pacing and your ability to recall under pressure.
  2. Mark it against the official mark scheme. Pay close attention to the exact wording the mark scheme uses. If it says "diffusion down a concentration gradient" and you wrote "moves from high to low concentration," your answer may score, but the mark scheme phrasing is what examiners look for.
  3. Adopt mark scheme language in your revision notes. When you see how examiners phrase a marking point, copy that phrasing into your notes. Over time, you build a vocabulary of precise answers that match what the mark scheme rewards.
  4. Track your errors by question type, not just by topic. You may know enzyme content well but still lose marks on "explain" questions because you describe without giving reasons. Separating content gaps from technique gaps sharpens your revision.
  5. Practise individual questions, not just full papers. If you struggle with data interpretation, pull out every graph question from three past papers and work through them together. Concentrated practice on a specific skill is more efficient than repeating full papers.

  3. Draw and label a plant cell from memory. Are your labels connected by straight, horizontal lines pointing to the correct structures?
  4. Find a graph question in a past paper. Does your answer quote specific data values from the graph?
  5. Look at your last three past paper attempts. Are your lost marks concentrated in one question type (describe, explain, data interpretation, diagrams) or spread evenly? If concentrated, that is where your next revision session should focus.
