The Paper at a Glance

Cambridge IGCSE Geography Paper 1 tests Physical Geography. You have 1 hour and 45 minutes to answer structured questions drawn from the physical geography themes on the syllabus: rivers, coasts, weather and climate, and natural hazards (earthquakes, volcanoes, tropical storms). The paper carries 75 marks and contributes 45% of your final grade.

That weighting makes Paper 1 the single largest component of your IGCSE Geography result. A strong performance here can compensate for weaker showings elsewhere. A poor one is very difficult to recover from. The good news: the question formats are predictable, the mark scheme conventions are consistent, and the skills that earn top marks can be practised systematically.

Understanding the Question Structure

Every question on Paper 1 follows a rising-tariff format. Questions begin with low-mark items (1-2 marks) that test recall or simple skills, then build to higher-mark items (4, 5, 6, or 7 marks) that demand explanation, analysis, or evaluation. Recognising where you sit on this ladder within each question is critical to allocating the right amount of detail.

The command word tells you exactly what is required. "Describe" means state what you observe. "Explain" means give reasons. "Suggest" means apply your understanding to an unfamiliar scenario. Mixing these up is one of the fastest ways to lose marks. A candidate who explains when asked to describe has wasted time and missed the point. A candidate who only describes when asked to explain has left marks on the table.

Time Management: The One-Minute Rule

With 75 marks in 105 minutes, you have roughly 1 minute and 24 seconds per mark. Round that down to one minute per mark for writing, which leaves a buffer of about 30 minutes spread across the whole paper for reading questions, studying resource material, and reviewing your answers.

A practical approach:

  1. Spend the first 2-3 minutes reading through the entire paper. Identify which topics have appeared and which question you feel most confident about.
  2. Allocate time per question strictly by marks. A 7-mark question deserves about 7-8 minutes of writing. A 1-mark question deserves 30 seconds.
  3. If you get stuck on a question, leave space and move on. Return to it with fresh eyes after completing the rest.
  4. Reserve the final 5-7 minutes to re-read your extended answers. Check that you have actually answered the question asked, not the one you wished had been asked.
Key point: The most common time-management mistake is spending too long on low-mark questions early in the paper and rushing the high-mark questions at the end. Those final 5-7 mark questions carry the most weight and reward developed answers. Protect their time.

How Mark Schemes Actually Work

Understanding how examiners mark your paper removes a lot of guesswork from exam preparation. Cambridge uses two distinct marking approaches on Paper 1, and knowing which one applies to a given question changes how you should write your answer.

Point-based marking (low to mid-tariff questions)

For questions worth 1-4 marks, examiners work from a list of acceptable points. Each valid point earns one mark. If the question is worth 3 marks, you need three distinct, creditworthy points. Repeating the same idea in different words does not earn a second mark. Vague statements that could apply to any topic do not earn marks either.

Practical implication: for a 3-mark "explain" question, write three clear, separate points. Each point should contain a reason and its consequence. "The river erodes laterally on the outside of the meander because the water flows faster there, which undercuts the bank" is one developed point worth one mark. Stack three of those and you have full marks.

Levels-based marking (extended response questions)

Questions worth 5-7 marks are typically assessed using a levels framework. The examiner reads your whole answer and decides which level it belongs to, then fine-tunes the mark within that level.

The jump from Level 1 to Level 2 requires development: don't just state a fact, explain why it matters and what it leads to. The jump from Level 2 to Level 3 requires specificity and thoroughness: use named examples, precise geographical vocabulary, and ensure your answer addresses every part of the question.

Topic-Specific Strategies

Rivers

River questions frequently centre on processes (erosion, transportation, deposition) and the landforms they produce (waterfalls, meanders, oxbow lakes, floodplains, deltas). The mark scheme rewards candidates who can link process to landform with a clear chain of causation.

A strong answer about waterfall formation, for example, does not just say "hard rock is on top and soft rock is underneath." It traces the sequence: the river flows over a band of resistant rock overlying weaker rock. Hydraulic action and abrasion erode the softer rock more quickly, creating a step. Water plunging over the step erodes a plunge pool at the base. The overhang of harder rock is undercut and eventually collapses. The waterfall retreats upstream over time, leaving a gorge.

Map and photograph interpretation is common in river questions. Practise identifying river features on OS maps: contour patterns showing V-shaped valleys, meandering blue lines on flat floodplains, and the width of the floodplain indicated by the spacing of contours on either side of the valley floor.

Coasts

Coastal questions follow a similar process-landform structure. You need to explain how constructive and destructive waves differ, how erosion produces cliffs, wave-cut platforms, caves, arches, stacks, and stumps, and how deposition creates beaches, spits, and bars. Longshore drift is tested frequently and must be explained with reference to the prevailing wind direction, the angle of wave approach, swash, and backwash.

Coastal management questions are a reliable feature. Know the difference between hard engineering (sea walls, groynes, rock armour, gabions) and soft engineering (beach nourishment, managed retreat, dune stabilisation). The mark scheme consistently rewards candidates who can state the method, explain how it works, and then evaluate its effectiveness with at least one advantage and one disadvantage.

Weather and Climate

Expect questions on reading and interpreting climate graphs, explaining why different locations have different climates, and describing weather hazards. You should be able to read a climate graph and describe the annual temperature range, total annual rainfall, and the distribution of rainfall across the year.

A frequent pitfall: candidates confuse weather and climate. Weather is the short-term atmospheric conditions at a specific time and place. Climate is the average weather pattern over a long period, typically 30 years. Using the wrong term costs marks.

Natural Hazards

Questions cover earthquakes, volcanoes, and tropical storms. For each hazard type, you need to explain the cause (plate tectonics for earthquakes and volcanoes, warm ocean water for tropical storms), describe the effects (primary and secondary), and evaluate responses (prediction, preparation, immediate response, long-term recovery).

IGCSE Geography mark schemes reward candidates who distinguish between effects in countries at different levels of development. An earthquake of the same magnitude causes different impacts in Japan compared to Haiti. The physical event is similar; the human vulnerability and capacity to respond differ enormously. Build this comparison into your revision and your exam answers.

Examiner pattern: Natural hazard questions almost always ask about a named example. If the question says "for a named example you have studied," you must provide one. An answer without a named location, date, or specific detail about a real event will not reach Level 3. Prepare two or three case studies per hazard type with specific facts: location, date, magnitude or category, death toll, economic cost, and response measures.

The Art of Using Resources

Paper 1 questions frequently include resource material: photographs, maps, diagrams, data tables, or climate graphs. Many candidates glance at these and then write from memory. This is a mistake. The resources are there because the examiner wants you to use them. Answers that reference the resource directly, quoting figures, describing features visible in a photograph, or reading trends from a graph, earn more marks than generic textbook responses.

When a question says "Using the photograph, describe..." your answer must refer to what you can see. "The river channel is wide and shallow with exposed gravel banks on the inside of the bend" is resource-based. "Rivers deposit material on the inside of meanders" is textbook-based. Both are true, but only the first one answers the question as asked.

Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

  1. Writing too much on low-mark questions. A 1-mark question needs one precise point. Writing a paragraph wastes time you need elsewhere.
  2. Ignoring command words. "Describe" and "Explain" require different types of answer. Read the command word before you start writing and check it again when you finish.
  3. Leaving gaps in cause-effect chains. Examiners look for logical links. "Deforestation causes flooding" skips the mechanism. "Deforestation removes trees, which reduces interception of rainfall. More water reaches the river channel more quickly, increasing the peak discharge and the flood risk" shows the chain.
  4. Using vague language. "The wave does stuff to the cliff" earns nothing. "Hydraulic action forces water and air into cracks in the rock, exerting pressure that widens the cracks over time" earns marks. Geographical vocabulary signals to the examiner that you understand the concept.
  5. Forgetting to use data. If the question provides data (rainfall figures, population statistics, discharge measurements), weave those numbers into your answer. Examiners specifically check whether candidates engage with provided data.
  6. Not answering every part of a multi-part question. Some extended questions have two or three components embedded in a single sentence. Underline each component so you address them all.

A Framework for Extended Answers

For 5-7 mark questions, structure matters. A clear framework prevents rambling and ensures you cover enough ground for Level 3.

PEE-D structure:
P - Point: state the geographical idea clearly.
E - Evidence: support it with a specific example, a case study detail, or data from the resource.
E - Explanation: explain the process or consequence, showing cause and effect.
D - Development: extend the point further, link to another factor, or evaluate significance.
Repeat this pattern two or three times for a 7-mark answer and you will hit Level 3 consistently.

Worked Example

Question: Explain how river processes create an oxbow lake. [4 marks]

Strong answer: On the outside of a meander bend, the river flows faster because there is less friction. This faster flow erodes the outer bank through hydraulic action and abrasion, undercutting it to form a river cliff (1). On the inside bend, the flow is slower, so the river loses energy and deposits material, building up a slip-off slope (1). Over time, erosion on the outer bends of two adjacent meanders narrows the neck of land between them (1). During a flood, the river breaks through this narrow neck, taking the shorter, straighter course. Deposition seals off the old meander loop, creating a horseshoe-shaped oxbow lake that gradually silts up (1).

Notice the structure: each sentence contains a process and its result. There is no wasted description. The answer follows the sequence of events logically.

Practice Strategies That Work

Passive reading of a textbook is the least effective way to prepare for Paper 1. Active practice with past papers is the most effective. Here is a structured approach.

  • Timed practice under exam conditions. Set a timer, close your notes, and work through a full past paper. Mark it afterwards using the official mark scheme. This builds the habit of writing under pressure and reveals which topics you genuinely understand versus those you only think you understand.
  • Mark scheme analysis. After completing a past paper, read the mark scheme carefully. Note which points are credited and how the examiner phrases acceptable answers. Over several papers, you will start to see patterns: certain phrases, processes, and case study details appear repeatedly. Those are the examiner's priorities.
  • Targeted topic revision. After marking your practice papers, identify the topics where you lost the most marks. Spend your revision time there, not on topics you already know well. This is more efficient than re-reading the whole syllabus evenly.
  • Write model answers for high-mark questions. Pick three or four 7-mark questions from past papers. Write your best answer for each, then compare it to the mark scheme. Rewrite any answer that did not reach Level 3. Keep these model answers as revision tools.
  • Build a case study bank. Create a concise list of named examples for each topic: a specific river (the River Tees, the Mississippi), a specific coastal area (the Holderness coast, the Nile Delta), a specific earthquake (Haiti 2010, Nepal 2015), a specific volcano (Mount Pinatubo 1991, Eyjafjallajokull 2010). For each, know 4-5 precise facts.

Paper 1 rewards preparation, precision, and structure. The questions are predictable. The mark scheme conventions are transparent. The gap between a good candidate and a great one is rarely knowledge. It is technique: reading the question accurately, using geographical vocabulary, developing each point fully, and managing your time so the high-mark questions get the attention they deserve. Every one of those skills improves with deliberate practice.
