Jesus made the statement, "...Just so, I tell you, there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents" after telling the parable of the lost sheep. In the parable, a shepherd leaves his ninety-nine sheep in search of one that has gone missing. When he finds the lost sheep, he rejoices and calls his friends and neighbors to celebrate with him. God did not lead the Israelites by the way of the land of the Philistines although that was near because He did not want them to see war and return to Egypt. The Israelites had just left Egypt and were on their way to the Promised Land. The way of the land of the Philistines was the shorter route, but it was also the more dangerous route because of the presence of the Philistines who were known for their military might. God knew that if the Israelites encountered war at this early stage, they might lose heart and return to Egypt. Therefore, He led them by a longer route through the wilderness, where they could learn and grow stronger before facing the challenges ahead.

When Naboth, the owner of a vineyard, was murdered by Ahab and Jezebel, God declared judgment against them. God declared that dogs would lick Ahab's blood where they had licked Naboth's blood, that he would require the blood of Naboth from Ahab's hand, and that the sword would not depart from the house of Ahab.
