Evaluating Ideas, Opinions And Viewpoint

It is one thing to understand what a writer says; it is another to judge it. Evaluating means weighing a writer's ideas and opinions: asking whether the argument really holds, whether the evidence is strong, where the writer is biased, and how two writers who disagree stack up against each other. This is the skill that separates a competent reader from a critical one, and it is rewarded directly in the highest reading bands of the directed-writing task.
