Sculpture
Resumen
A fine art sculpture has no job to do. Nobody sits on it, nobody drinks from it, no client signed off a brief and no user was consulted. It is an object made to be looked at, walked around and thought about, and everything it communicates it communicates through material, mass, surface and the space it takes up in a room you are also standing in. That absence of function is not a limitation. It is the reason a sculpture can be about grief, or weight, or absence, when a chair can only ever be about sitting.
This note covers the four ways of making form, which are carving away, modelling up, constructing and joining, and casting, and it covers what actually decides whether a piece stands up: armatures, gravity, shrinkage and joints. It then covers the two things sculptors think about that no other area of study requires, which are the void and the viewer's body. It finishes with the photography, because sculpture is submitted as photographs and those photographs are assessed as part of your work.
