Non-fiction Text Types
Resumen
An unseen extract lands in front of you with no title page and no explanation. Before you have understood a single sentence you can already know a great deal about it: who it was written for, what it was trying to do to them, and therefore which of its features are deliberate. A diary that reads oddly is not badly written; it is a diary. A news report that seems cold is not indifferent; it is a news report.
This note maps the territory the specification asks you to cover, from journalism and speeches to obituaries and travel writing, and shows how to place an unfamiliar extract on that map in the first thirty seconds. Getting the form right does not answer the question, but it stops you asking the wrong one.
