The Marketing Mix

Overview

Every product you buy, from a budget smartphone to a designer jacket, has been shaped by four interconnected decisions: what to sell, how much to charge, where to sell it, and how to tell people about it. Together these four elements form the marketing mix, and getting the balance right is what separates brands that thrive from those that quietly disappear.

In this lesson you will explore each of the four Ps (product, price, place, and promotion), learn how businesses choose pricing strategies, trace a product through its life cycle, and examine the distribution channels that connect producers to consumers. You will also see how the four Ps must work together as a coordinated package rather than as isolated choices.

Objectives

  1. Understand product: development of a new product/service, the difference between goods and services, packaging and its importance, product life cycle (main phases and extension strategies), managing and reviewing the product portfolio (Boston matrix)
  2. Understand price: the main pricing strategies and when they might be applied (cost plus, penetration, competition, skimming, promotional)
  3. Understand place and distribution channels: methods of distribution including retailers and e-tailers (e-commerce)
  4. Understand promotion: promotion strategies for different market segments (advertising, sponsorship, product trials, special offers, branding), above the line and below the line promotion techniques, public relations, the use of technology in promotion (targeted advertising online, viral advertising via social media, e-newsletters), the importance of a brand

Lesson Note

When Apple launches a new iPhone it does not simply design a phone and hope for the best. The team decides which features to include (product), sets a premium price (price), sells through its own stores and selected retailers (place), and creates global advertising campaigns (promotion). Change any one of those decisions and the entire launch changes with it. That interdependence is exactly what the marketing mix captures.
