Resumen
In 1974 a mid-sized Brazilian city could not afford an underground railway, so it built a bus system that worked like one: dedicated lanes, fares paid before boarding, level entry through wide doors. Fifty years later the idea has been copied in more than 150 cities. Good urban management is rarely about spending the most money.
This lesson covers the pressure on the rural-urban fringe and the greenfield against brownfield argument, then a working set of sustainability strategies for waste, transport, education, health, employment and housing. You will see them in action in London and in Curitiba, and learn to weigh the competing interests of planners, politicians, developers and industrialists, which is where the evaluation marks live.
