What makes strong advertising work in a portfolio

The key word in the specification is "corporate identity." This does not mean you need a real client. It means your advertising project should demonstrate an understanding of brand consistency. If you are designing a poster campaign for a fictional product, the colour palette, typography, imagery style and tone of voice should hold together as if they belong to the same brand. A poster that uses a serif font, a social media banner that uses a sans-serif font, and a leaflet that uses a handwritten script will read as three separate projects, not a coherent campaign.

Consider creating a brief before you start. Who is the audience? What message does the advertisement need to communicate? What tone is appropriate? A brief gives your project a rationale that the examiner can follow, and it prevents you from making aesthetic choices that look good individually but do not serve a purpose.

Self-check question: Look at your advertising project. If you removed all the text, would a viewer still understand the mood and target audience from the imagery, colour and composition alone? If not, your visual communication is relying too heavily on words rather than doing the graphic work itself.

Communication graphics

Communication graphics is about developing graphic solutions for worldwide identity. The specification asks you to explore traditional and digital graphic media in both two and three dimensions. This area of study is broader than advertising because it is not limited to selling a product. It includes wayfinding systems, information graphics, identity design for organisations, events or campaigns, and any context where visual communication crosses cultural and linguistic boundaries.

Working with universal visual language

The phrase "worldwide identity" in the specification is significant. It means your graphic solution should communicate across language barriers. An airport wayfinding system that relies on English-language text fails this test. The same system using universally recognisable pictograms succeeds. When developing communication graphics projects, think about whether your visual choices would make sense to someone who does not speak your language.

Three-dimensional work is explicitly named here. A pop-up display stand, an exhibition installation, or a branded environment (the way a retail space is designed to communicate a brand identity through spatial graphics) all fall within this area. If you have access to materials for model-making, a three-dimensional component can demonstrate skills that two-dimensional work alone cannot show.

Design for print

Design for print covers creating visual and written material for public distribution. The specification asks you to develop solutions in both traditional print and digital technology. This is one of the most practical areas of study because the outputs are tangible: posters, flyers, brochures, magazines, catalogues, book covers, editorial layouts, invitations and any other material that gets printed and physically distributed.

Understanding print conventions

Typography is central to design for print. You need to understand how typefaces work at different sizes, how leading (line spacing) affects readability, how column widths influence the reading experience, and how text and image interact on a page. A common mistake is choosing a typeface because it looks interesting in isolation, without testing whether it remains legible at body-text size or whether it pairs well with the other fonts in the layout.

Layout grids are your best friend here. Professional print design almost always uses a grid to organise content. A grid does not make your design rigid or predictable. It gives you a structure to work within, and the most dynamic print layouts often achieve their energy by breaking the grid in controlled, intentional ways. Show your grid in your development work. Mark it on early thumbnails. The examiner needs to see that your layout decisions are structured, not random.

Bleed, trim marks, fold lines and safe zones are production considerations that separate a student who understands print from one who is designing for the screen and hoping it translates. If your project involves a folded leaflet, show the flat net with fold marks. If it involves a poster, indicate the bleed area. These details demonstrate technical awareness.

Worked example: a magazine cover

Suppose your project is a magazine cover. Your development might begin with twenty thumbnail sketches exploring different placements of the masthead, coverlines and central image. From those, you select three to develop at full size, testing different typeface combinations and colour schemes. You photograph or illustrate your cover image, experimenting with cropping and scale. You produce a final high-resolution version with correct bleed and trim marks, and you present it alongside one or two interior spreads to show how the cover design language carries through the publication.

Illustration

Illustration uses narrative and visual storytelling to communicate factual, fictional or technical ideas for a particular purpose or audience. The specification asks you to use a range of illustration materials, tools and techniques such as digital applications, wet and dry processes, and drawing, painting and printing techniques.

Purpose-driven illustration

The critical phrase is "for a particular purpose or audience." Illustration in a graphic communication context is not fine art. It serves a brief. An editorial illustration accompanies and interprets a written article. A technical illustration explains how something works. A children's book illustration tells a story visually. A medical illustration communicates anatomical information with precision. Your portfolio work should make the purpose clear.

Range of technique is expected. If every illustration in your portfolio is a digital vector drawing, you are showing competence in one medium but not range. Mix wet media (watercolour, ink wash) with dry media (pencil, charcoal, pastel), and include at least some digitally produced or digitally enhanced work. The specification explicitly names this range, and it feeds directly into AO2 marks for experimenting with media, materials, techniques and processes.

Common mistake: Treating illustration as decoration rather than communication. A beautiful drawing that does not serve a specific communicative purpose will score lower on AO4 than a simpler but purposeful illustration that clearly supports a message, narrative or informational goal. Always connect your illustration work back to its intended audience and function.

Interactive design, including web, app and game

Interactive design is about using interactive technology to communicate with and engage audiences. The specification names web-based, mobile and personal devices, television and games as platforms, and lists two- and three-dimensional graphics, digital applications and time-based media as tools and techniques.

What examiners expect from interactive design projects

You do not need to build a working website or a functional app. The exam assesses your design thinking and visual communication skills, not your coding ability. What the examiner wants to see is a clearly designed user interface that demonstrates an understanding of how interactive systems communicate with their users.

A strong interactive design project might include:

  • User personas and a brief explaining who the product is for and what it needs to do
  • Wireframes showing the structural layout of screens or pages
  • Visual design mock-ups at full resolution showing typography, colour, imagery and iconography
  • User flow diagrams showing how a user moves through the experience
  • Annotations explaining design decisions, such as why certain colours were chosen for accessibility or why button placement follows established interaction patterns

Typography and layout are just as important in interactive design as they are in print. Screen-based typography has its own conventions: larger body text sizes, greater line spacing, button labels that communicate action clearly. If your interactive design uses the same type sizes and spacing you would use on a printed poster, it will look wrong even if the viewer cannot articulate why.

Time-based media

Time-based media (animation, motion graphics, video) is listed as a technique for interactive design. If your project includes animated elements, present them as storyboards or frame sequences on your supporting sheets. The examiner cannot play a video, so your two-dimensional presentation needs to convey the movement, timing and transitions clearly. Storyboard panels with arrows, timing notes and transition descriptions are the standard approach.
