Why mistakes matter more than you think

Think of a chemistry exam as a recipe. You can have every ingredient memorised and still ruin the dish if you misread a step or forget to preheat the oven. The Pearson Edexcel IGCSE Chemistry exam works the same way. Most marks are not lost because students do not know the chemistry. They are lost because of avoidable slips: unbalanced equations, misread command words, missing units, or explanations that stop one sentence short of the marking point. Now both sides have 2 Mg and 2 O. Always count each element on both sides before moving on. A useful habit is to draw a small tally table next to the equation: element, left count, right count. If the numbers do not match, adjust the coefficients.

State symbols are free marks. If the question asks for state symbols, add (s), (l), (g) or (aq) after every formula. 2Mg(s) + O2(g) → 2MgO(s). Forgetting state symbols when asked is one of the most common edexcel igcse chemistry errors, and it is entirely preventable.

Mistake 2: Mole calculations without showing working

Mole calculations are like following directions: even if you arrive at the right destination, skipping a turn means nobody can retrace your route. The wrong approach: Writing only the final number, e.g., "0.25 mol."

  1. Write the formula: moles = mass / Mr
  2. Calculate Mr explicitly: e.g., Mr of CaCO3 = 40 + 12 + (3 x 16) = 100
  3. Substitute: moles = 25 / 100 = 0.25 mol

Three lines, three marks' worth of safety net. The same principle applies to concentration calculations (moles = concentration x volume), gas volume calculations (using 24 dm3 at rtp) and enthalpy calculations. Always show the formula, the substitution and the answer with units.

Mistake 3: Confusing elements, compounds and mixtures

Imagine a drawer of socks. A drawer containing only red socks is like a pure element. A drawer containing pairs of red and blue socks stitched together is like a compound. A drawer containing loose red socks and loose blue socks jumbled together is like a mixture. Mistake 5: Ignoring the reactivity series in predictions

The reactivity series is your roadmap for predicting whether a reaction will occur. Thinking of it as a league table helps: a more reactive metal can displace a less reactive metal from a compound, just as a stronger team pushes a weaker one down the standings. Students lose marks by either forgetting the order or failing to apply it logically.

The wrong approach: Predicting that copper can displace zinc from zinc sulfate solution.

Why it loses marks: Copper is less reactive than zinc. A less reactive metal cannot displace a more reactive one. No reaction occurs.

The correct technique: Memorise the order: potassium, sodium, lithium, calcium, magnesium, aluminium, zinc, iron, copper, silver, gold (most reactive to least reactive). To predict whether a displacement reaction will occur, check whether the uncombined metal is above the metal in the compound. If it is above, the reaction happens. If it is below, no reaction.

Mistake 6: Misreading command words

Command words are the sat-nav of exam questions. "Describe" and "explain" are different routes to different destinations, and following the wrong one means arriving at the wrong answer.

  • State - give a brief, factual answer with no explanation needed
  • Describe - say what happens, step by step, without saying why
  • Explain - say what happens AND why, linking observations to scientific principles
  • Suggest - apply your knowledge to an unfamiliar situation; the answer may not be directly in the specification
  • Calculate - use numbers and show your working; a written explanation is not required

A student who "explains" when asked to "describe" wastes time but usually still gets the marks. A student who "describes" when asked to "explain" will lose the reasoning marks. Always underline the command word before you start writing.

Mistake 7: Rates of reaction explanations that skip collision theory

Imagine a busy corridor between classes. The more students in the corridor, the more likely they are to bump into each other. If they are all running instead of walking, collisions happen even more often and with more force. That is collision theory in a nutshell, and every rates of reaction explanation on the edexcel IGCSE Chemistry exam must use it.

The wrong approach: "Increasing temperature increases the rate of reaction."

Why it loses marks: The statement is true but earns no explanation marks. The examiner wants to know why.

The correct technique: Increasing temperature gives particles more kinetic energy, so they move faster. This means particles collide more frequently, and a greater proportion of collisions have energy equal to or greater than the activation energy. Therefore, the rate of successful collisions increases, and the rate of reaction increases.

The same framework applies to concentration (more particles per unit volume means more frequent collisions), surface area (a larger exposed surface means more particles are available to collide) and pressure for gases (forcing particles closer together increases collision frequency).

Catalyst trap: A catalyst provides an alternative reaction pathway with a lower activation energy. It does NOT "give particles more energy" or "make particles move faster." Students who confuse catalyst action with temperature effects lose marks every session. The catalyst is not used up in the reaction and is chemically unchanged at the end.

Mistake 8: Forgetting units or using the wrong ones

A number without a unit is like a sentence without a full stop: it looks unfinished, and the examiner may not award the mark. Common unit errors include:

  • Writing moles as "m" instead of "mol"
  • Giving concentration without "mol/dm3"
  • Expressing gas volume without "dm3" or "cm3"
  • Omitting "kJ/mol" from enthalpy change values

Mistake 9: Timing failures on Paper 2
