Two businesses both make a profit of one million dollars. Are they equally successful? Not necessarily, because one might have used ten times the resources of the other to earn it. Profitability answers the question that profit alone cannot: how good is the business at turning its sales and its capital into profit?
In this lesson you will learn the difference between profit and profitability and how to measure it using the gross and net profit margins and the return on capital employed. You will be able to calculate these ratios, read what they say about a business, and judge its performance over time or against a rival.
