Übersicht

Thirty years ago a clothing retailer that wanted customers in another country had to sign a lease, fit out a shop, hire staff who spoke the language and hope. Today it can put up a website in that country's language on a Monday and take its first order on the Wednesday, from a warehouse it already owns. The barrier that used to protect every local retailer, the cost of physically being there, has largely gone.

This topic has only two objectives, e-commerce and digital communication, and it is one of the shortest in the specification. It is also one of the most useful, because technology touches every other topic you study: it changes how businesses reach markets, how they talk to stakeholders, how much stock they hold, how their staff are organised and who their competitors are. In this lesson you will learn what e-commerce actually does to a business's market and its costs, what digital communication is used for and with whom, and how to argue both sides when a case study asks whether the change has been good for a particular firm.

Ziele

  1. e-Commerce.

Lektionshinweis

For most of business history, the size of a firm's market was decided by geography. A shop could sell to the people who could reach it, a factory to the wholesalers who could collect from it, and expanding meant physically opening somewhere else, which was slow and expensive. That constraint protected small local businesses as much as it limited them: the shop on the corner had no competition from a shop three hundred kilometres away, because that shop could not reach its customers.
