Opportunities And Challenges Of Urbanisation

Overview

Cities are humanity's greatest invention and, at the same time, the site of some of its hardest problems. The same city can offer a young person a university, a hospital, a concert and a steady wage, while a few streets away a million people live in a settlement with no legal water supply and no title to the land beneath their homes. Urban living is a story of opportunity and challenge held tightly together.

In this lesson you will weigh both sides. You will learn the real opportunities cities offer, the challenges that rapid growth creates (inequality, housing shortages, weak services, unemployment, traffic and waste, and the rise of unplanned settlements), and how the spreading edge of the city, urban sprawl, changes the countryside on the rural urban fringe.

Objectives

  1. Opportunities of urban living, for example, culture, housing, services, leisure, consumption, economic development.
  2. The opportunities and challenges of rapid urban growth: inequality, service provision, housing, employment, transport, waste management, unplanned settlements.
  3. The impact of urban sprawl on the rural-urban fringe/surrounding areas.

Lesson Note

Examiners love balanced answers. A strong candidate never says cities are simply good or simply bad: they show that the very growth which creates wealth, jobs and culture also strains housing, services and the environment. This topic trains you to argue both sides with named, specific evidence.
