Electrical Circuits Continued

Übersicht

How do you get exactly 3 volts out of a 9 volt battery for one part of a circuit? The answer is a potential divider, a pair of resistors that share out the voltage in proportion to their resistance. It is one of the neatest and most useful ideas in electronics.

In this lesson you will see why the voltage across a conductor grows with its resistance at constant current, learn how a variable potential divider works, and use the potential-divider equation to calculate the share of the voltage across each resistor. These ideas power the sensing circuits behind thermostats and light-controlled switches.

Ziele

  1. [Core] Calculate the combined resistance of two or more resistors in series
  2. [Core] Know the advantages of connecting lamps in parallel in a circuit
  3. [Core] Know that, for a parallel circuit, the current from the source is larger than the current in each branch
  4. [Core] Know that the combined resistance of two resistors in parallel is less than that of either resistor by itself
  5. [Supplement] Recall and use in calculations, the fact that (a) the sum of the currents entering a junction in a parallel circuit is equal to the sum of the currents that leave the junction (b) the total p.d. across the components in a series circuit is equal to the sum of the individual p.d.s across each component (c) the p.d. across each branch of a parallel arrangement of components is the p.d. across the whole arrangement
  6. [Supplement] Calculate the combined resistance of two resistors in parallel

Lektionshinweis

Real circuits rarely need the full battery voltage everywhere. Potential dividers let you tap off just the voltage a component needs, and combined with a thermistor or a light-dependent resistor they become the heart of temperature and light sensors. Mastering the share-out rule here is a direct route to circuit marks.
