Almost every workshop mistake that ends with a scrapped piece of timber, a bent steel bracket that will not sit square, or an acrylic panel drilled in the wrong place can be traced back to one moment: the marking out. Measuring and marking out is the quiet, unglamorous stage where a drawing is transferred onto the real material before a single cut is made. Get it right and the rest of the making goes smoothly; get it wrong and no amount of skilful sawing or filing can rescue the part.
This note shows you how to measure and mark out consistently and accurately on woods, metals and polymers using the correct hand tools, datum surfaces and CAD-driven methods.
