Listening: Understand And Respond To Spoken Language

Übersicht

Listening is the section candidates prepare for least, which is a poor decision for something worth thirty per cent of the qualification. It is Section A of Paper 2, it carries 36 marks, and it contains five tasks. Every task is played twice. And before the first recording begins you are given five minutes to read the question paper.

Those five minutes are the most valuable five minutes in the qualification, and most of this lesson is about how to spend them. You will also see what each of the five tasks contains, how the four AO3 strands turn into question types, why an answer with a spelling mistake in it still scores, and three worked tasks: a multiple choice set with its distractors taken apart, a set of open questions that ask for two things each, and the attitude question that closes the section.

Ziele

  1. In order to meet the requirements of AO3, students are expected to:
  2. demonstrate general and specific understanding of different types of spoken language
  3. follow and understand clear standard speech using familiar language across a range of specified contexts
  4. identify the overall message, key points, details and opinions in a variety of short and longer spoken passages, involving some more complex language, recognising the relationship between past, present and future events
  5. deduce meaning from a variety of short and longer spoken texts, involving some complex language and more abstract material, including short narratives and authentic material addressing a wide range of contemporary and cultural themes
  6. recognise and respond to key information, important themes and ideas in more extended spoken text, including authentic sources, adapted and abridged, as appropriate, by being able to answer questions, extract information, evaluate and draw conclusions.

Lektionshinweis

Listening is Section A of Paper 2. The whole paper is a written exam of 1 hour 45 minutes carrying 78 marks and 65 per cent of the qualification, and it splits into this Listening section worth 36 marks and a Reading section worth 42. Those 36 marks are 30 per cent of the qualification on their own, and the specification weights AO3 at exactly that figure. The section contains five tasks and consists of a variety of short and longer spoken pieces of language. The texts and questions increase in demand as the section goes on, with some more complex language later, and every task links with the themes named in the subject content.
