The score that feels like progress

Here is a pattern almost every IGCSE student falls into at some point. You sit a past paper cold and score 42%. It stings. You go back over the topics, you sit the same paper again a fortnight later, and this time you score 61%. Nineteen marks better. It feels like proof that the revision worked.

Some of it is. But not all of it, and the difference matters enormously for how you spend the weeks before your exam.

When you sit a paper for the second time, two separate things push your score up. The first is that you genuinely understand the material better than you did. The second is that you have seen this specific paper before. You recognise the phrasing of question 4. You remember that the graph question wanted a tangent. You know, without quite being able to say why, that the answer to the electrolysis question involved the negative electrode.

That second effect is real, it is measurable, and it does not travel with you into the exam hall. The examiner will not be setting the paper you practised.

How big is the gap?

Look at students who re-sit a paper they have already done, and compare that with how the same students perform on papers they are meeting for the first time. The gains on the repeated paper are substantially larger, often several times larger, than the gains those same students show on unfamiliar material over the same period.

Both numbers are positive. That is the encouraging part. Practice really does make students better at papers they have never seen. But the repeated-paper figure overstates what you should expect on exam day, because part of it is familiarity with one particular set of questions.

The honest way to read your practice scores: your score on a paper you have never seen before is the closest thing you have to a prediction of your exam result. Your score on a paper you have sat before is a measure of how well you have absorbed that paper. Both are useful. They answer different questions.

What repeated practice is not

There is a tempting conclusion here that turns out to be wrong, and it is worth correcting because it leads students to abandon a technique that works.

The conclusion goes: if re-sitting a paper mostly measures familiarity, then students who drill the same paper repeatedly must simply be memorising the answers, and the whole exercise is worthless.

The evidence does not support that. If students were memorising answer keys, their scores on heavily repeated papers would climb towards full marks. They do not. Students who sit the same paper many times still tend to plateau well short of a perfect score, often somewhere around the middle of the mark range. They are not banking answers. They are running into the limits of what they actually understand.

That plateau is one of the most useful signals in your entire revision programme, and almost nobody reads it properly.

Your plateau is a diagnosis

If you sit a paper repeatedly and your score climbs from 40% to 55% and then simply stops, that ceiling is telling you something specific. The marks you keep getting are the ones you understand. The marks you keep missing, sitting after sitting, are not careless errors. They are a genuine gap in your knowledge that revisiting the same paper will never close, because you already know what the question is asking and you still cannot answer it.

At that point, doing the paper a sixth time is the least productive thing available to you. What you need is to go back to the underlying topic, learn it properly, and only then test yourself again, ideally on different questions.

The students who improve fastest are not the ones who grind one paper. They are the ones who treat a stalled score as a pointer to the topic that needs teaching, not more testing.

A practice cycle that measures what matters

Here is a structure that gives you both kinds of information and keeps you honest about your progress.

  1. Sit a fresh paper under timed conditions. No notes, no pausing, no looking anything up. This is your measurement, and it only works if the conditions are real.
  2. Mark it strictly against the mark scheme. Not generously. If the mark scheme wanted a specific term and you wrote something close, that is not a mark.
  3. Sort your lost marks into two piles. Marks you lost because you did not know the content, and marks you lost because you knew it but made an error under pressure. These need completely different responses.
  4. Teach yourself the content gaps. Notes, a video, a diagram, an explanation from someone who understands it. Do not go straight back to questions.
  5. Re-sit that paper if you like. It is a reasonable check that the teaching landed. Just do not treat the improved score as your predicted grade.
  6. Sit a different fresh paper. This is the real test. If your score on unfamiliar material has moved, you have genuinely learned something.

Step six is the one students skip, and it is the only step that answers the question they actually care about.

Two numbers worth tracking

Most students track one number: their most recent score. Track two instead.

The first number is the one to watch as your exam approaches. If it is climbing across papers you have never seen, your revision is working. If it is flat while your repeat scores look wonderful, you are getting very good at a small number of specific papers and no better at the subject.

Why this matters more for IGCSE than you might think

IGCSE subjects tend to have large, well-defined syllabuses and a long run of available past papers. That is a gift, but it creates a specific trap. There are enough papers available that a student can spend an entire revision period cycling through a handful of them, scoring better each time, and never test themselves on genuinely unfamiliar material.

Cambridge, Pearson Edexcel and OxfordAQA all rotate their question styles within a stable framework. The framework is what you need to master. Individual questions are just instances of it. A student who has internalised the framework can handle a question they have never seen; a student who has memorised twelve papers cannot, and will not find out until it is too late to fix.

This is also why working through a broad question bank tends to beat re-drilling a narrow set of papers. Breadth forces you to meet the same underlying skill in unfamiliar clothing, which is precisely the transfer you need on the day.

Two students, same effort, different outcomes

Consider two students preparing for the same IGCSE subject over eight weeks, both putting in the same hours.

The first picks four past papers and works through them repeatedly. By week eight her scores on those four papers have gone from the low forties to the mid seventies. She feels ready. In the exam she meets a question phrased in a way she has not seen, panics slightly, and finishes on a grade below what her practice suggested.

The second works through a much wider spread of questions, keeps three papers sealed until the final fortnight, and marks everything against the mark scheme without mercy. His scores climb more slowly and less dramatically, from the low forties into the high fifties, and he spends more of the eight weeks feeling like he is not improving. When he opens a sealed paper in week seven and scores 61%, that number means something, because he has never seen the questions.

The second student walks into the exam with an accurate picture of where he stands and a skill that transfers. The first walks in with a number that was never a prediction. The difference was not effort or ability. It was what they chose to measure.

Practical rules to take away

  • Never quote a repeat score as your predicted grade. Not to yourself, not to your parents, not to your teacher. Use a first-attempt score.
  • Keep some papers untouched. Set aside three or four papers you will not look at until the final weeks. They are your clean measurements when it matters most.
  • A stalled repeat score means stop repeating. Go back to the topic. The paper has told you everything it can.
  • Vary the source of your questions. Topic questions, different sessions, different papers within the same subject. Familiarity with one paper is not the skill being examined.
  • Mark strictly, always. A generously marked practice paper is worse than no practice paper, because it produces a number you will trust and should not.

The uncomfortable, encouraging summary

Your re-sit scores are flattering you a little. That is worth knowing, and it is worth adjusting for when you estimate your grade.

But the underlying finding is genuinely good news. Students who practise consistently do get better at questions they have never encountered before. The improvement is smaller than a repeat score suggests, and it is slower than anyone would like, but it is real and it is transferable. It shows up precisely where it needs to: on unfamiliar material, under timed conditions, which is the situation you will be in on the morning of your IGCSE exam.

Practise widely. Mark honestly. Watch your first-attempt scores. And when a paper stops teaching you anything, have the discipline to put it down and go back to the topic underneath it.
