Treat this as a design problem, not a group essay

Notice that a single well-chosen issue, canteen food waste in this example, can be analysed through all three lenses at once. This is a deliberate feature of good sustainability projects, not a coincidence: real sustainability problems are rarely purely environmental or purely economic, and a group that can explain the trade-offs between lenses (composting is environmentally attractive but has a real cost; redistributing food is socially valuable but raises hygiene and logistics questions) demonstrates a level of understanding a single-lens project cannot reach.

You are also expected to understand the background to current debates about sustainability, including the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, and the role of national and global citizenship in effective sustainable development. You do not need to memorise all seventeen Goals, but you should be able to point to the one or two that your specific action connects to and explain the connection in your own words rather than quoting the Goal's title.

Sustainability at a local, national and global level: scoping the action

A common design mistake is choosing an issue at the wrong scale for the time and resources a group actually has. Global issues like ocean plastic or global carbon emissions are compelling to write about but almost impossible for a school group to meaningfully act on in a way that produces evidence of a real outcome. National issues are more tractable if your group can genuinely influence a national-level policy or campaign, which is rare. Local issues, something in your own school or immediate community, are usually the right scale, precisely because your group can measure a before-and-after, and can talk to the people actually affected.

The specification asks you to understand different methods and approaches to sustainability and reasons for successes and failures, alongside current challenges and opportunities at global, national and local levels. A strong way to demonstrate this is to research one example of a similar approach that worked elsewhere, and one that failed, before designing your own action, then explicitly explain what you kept and what you changed and why.

Worked example. A group wants to reduce single-use plastic in their school. Researching first, they find a nearby school ran a plastic-bottle ban that failed because no alternative was provided, so students just brought plastic bottles from home instead of using the canteen. They redesign their own action around that failure: instead of a ban, they propose a subsidised reusable bottle scheme plus visible refill points, directly addressing the reason the earlier approach failed. That comparison, named explicitly in their report, is worth more than a page of general statistics about ocean plastic.

Collaboration and teamwork: the part that is actually graded

The role of collaboration and team-work in the group sustainability action project is assessed as its own strand, which means your group needs to generate visible evidence of it, not just claim it happened in a final paragraph. Three habits produce that evidence naturally.

  • Assign roles explicitly and record them. Research lead, contact and outreach lead, evidence and documentation lead, presentation lead. Roles can rotate, but write down who held which role and when.
  • Keep a shared decision log. Every time the group changes direction, meaning of the action, or splits a task differently than planned, log it: what changed, why, who raised it. This becomes the backbone of your joint reflection later, and it is also the single best evidence that collaboration genuinely happened rather than being asserted after the fact.
  • Resolve disagreements on paper, not just in conversation. If two group members disagree about the direction of the action, note the disagreement and how it was resolved. Assessors read this as evidence of real teamwork; a group with no recorded disagreement at all often reads as one person driving the whole project.

Common mistakes specific to the group project

Mistake: choosing an issue nobody in the group actually cares about. Motivation matters more here than in most projects, because a stalled group project is much harder to rescue solo than a stalled individual project. Pick an issue at least one group member has a genuine stake in.

Mistake: dividing the report by section instead of by role. If one person writes the introduction, one writes the middle, and one writes the conclusion, the report reads as three voices stitched together and gives no evidence of collaborative decision making. Divide by function (research, delivery, documentation, presentation) and write the report together, or at minimum edit it together as a final pass.

Mistake: treating "the action" as only the visible output. A poster, an event, or a campaign is the visible output, but the evidence that gets marked is the process: your planning, your research into what has worked elsewhere, your handling of setbacks, and your honest evaluation of what the action actually achieved versus what you hoped it would achieve.

Self-check questions before your group submits

  • Can we point to specific evidence, not just a claim, that every group member contributed meaningfully?
  • Have we analysed our sustainability issue through more than one lens (economic, environmental, social)?
  • Did we scope the action at a level (local, national or global) that we could actually measure and act on?
  • Do we have a decision log showing at least one point where the group changed direction and why?
  • Does our joint reflection honestly evaluate the outcome, including anything that did not go as planned?

Building your own practice questions as a group

Because there is no written paper to rehearse against, the most useful substitute is a set of questions your group interrogates itself with at every checkpoint, functioning as your own OxfordAQA IGCSE Global Skills Projects practice questions.   • If our action produced no visible change at all, would we still have strong evidence of planning, research and teamwork to submit?
  • Whose voice is missing from our decision log so far, and why?

Answering these honestly, and recording the answers, gives you a running commentary on the project that is far more useful at write-up time than trying to reconstruct your reasoning from memory in the final week.
