Faeces are not excretory products because the food was never part of the body's metabolism; it simply passed through the digestive tract without being absorbed.
The wrong answer: "Excretion is the removal of waste from the body, such as faeces and urine."
Why it loses marks: Faeces are not metabolic waste. Including them in a definition of excretion contradicts the definition and earns a reject mark in many edexcel igcse human biology mark schemes.
The correct answer: "Excretion is the removal of metabolic waste products from the body. Examples include carbon dioxide (removed by the lungs), urea (removed by the kidneys) and water (removed by the lungs, skin and kidneys)."
Mistake 2: Saying blood vessels "move" during thermoregulation
When explaining vasodilation and vasoconstriction, many candidates write that blood vessels move closer to or further from the skin surface. They do not move. What changes is the diameter of the arterioles. In vasodilation, arterioles near the skin surface widen, allowing more blood to flow close to the surface, increasing heat loss by radiation. In vasoconstriction, arterioles narrow, reducing blood flow near the surface and conserving heat.
The wrong answer: "Blood vessels move to the surface of the skin to release heat."
Why it loses marks: This is explicitly rejected in the mark scheme. The blood vessels are fixed in position; only their diameter changes.
The correct answer: "Vasodilation occurs: arterioles near the skin surface widen, so more blood flows close to the surface and more heat is lost by radiation."
Mistake 3: Incomplete enzyme explanations
Enzymes are examined across almost every topic on the specification, from digestion to respiration to the immune system. The most common error is giving a partial explanation of denaturation. Saying "the enzyme is denatured" is not enough for a mark. You must explain the mechanism.
The wrong answer: "At high temperatures, the enzyme is denatured and stops working."
Why it loses marks: This states the outcome but not the mechanism. The mark scheme requires an explanation of why the enzyme stops working.
The correct answer: "At high temperatures, the bonds holding the enzyme's tertiary structure break, causing the active site to change shape. The substrate can no longer fit into the active site, so the enzyme can no longer catalyse the reaction."
The same principle applies to pH: extreme pH values change the shape of the active site. Always include the active-site-changes-shape step. It is the mechanism that earns the mark.
Mistake 4: Confusing breathing with respiration
This confusion appears in the edexcel igcse human biology errors log of every examiner. Breathing (ventilation) is the physical process of moving air into and out of the lungs. Respiration is the chemical process inside cells that releases energy from glucose. Aerobic respiration uses oxygen; anaerobic respiration does not.
The wrong answer: "We breathe to get energy."
Why it loses marks: Breathing supplies oxygen. Respiration releases energy. Mixing the two loses the mark for either.
The correct answer: "Breathing brings oxygen into the lungs, where it diffuses into the blood. Oxygen is then transported to cells, where it is used in aerobic respiration to release energy from glucose."
The word equation for aerobic respiration is: glucose + oxygen -> carbon dioxide + water (+ energy released). Write it accurately every time: C6H12O6 + 6O2 -> 6CO2 + 6H2O.
Mistake 5: Misreading command words
Command words tell you exactly what the examiner wants. "Describe" and "explain" are not the same thing, and treating them interchangeably is one of the most common edexcel igcse human biology mistakes on both papers.

Mistake 6: Forgetting to close the negative feedback loop
Questions about homeostasis, whether about temperature regulation, blood glucose or water balance, frequently ask about negative feedback. Many students describe the initial response but forget to close the loop. The whole point of negative feedback is that the response itself reduces the stimulus, which then reduces the response.
The wrong answer: "When blood glucose is too high, the pancreas releases insulin, and the liver converts glucose to glycogen."
Why it loses marks: This describes the response but does not close the loop. The answer stops at the effector stage without explaining that blood glucose then returns to normal, which reduces insulin secretion.
The correct answer: "When blood glucose rises, the pancreas detects this and releases insulin. Insulin causes the liver to convert glucose to glycogen, lowering blood glucose back to the normal level. The fall in blood glucose is then detected by the pancreas, which reduces insulin secretion. This is negative feedback."
Mistake 7: Vague pathogen descriptions
Disease questions require specific terminology. Saying "germs cause disease" or "the body fights off germs" earns no marks. Name the type of pathogen (virus, bacterium, fungus, protist), state the specific organism if the specification names one, and describe the transmission route precisely.
The wrong answer: "Malaria is caused by a germ spread by mosquitoes."
The correct answer: "Malaria is caused by a protist (Plasmodium) transmitted by the bite of an infected female Anopheles mosquito, which acts as a vector."
Mistake 8: Calculation errors from missing steps
Many candidates know the formulas but lose marks by skipping steps. Every calculation question should follow this pattern:
- Write the formula
- Substitute the values
- Show the arithmetic
- State the answer with the correct unit
If you make an arithmetic error but your method is correct, you still earn method marks. If you write only the final answer and it is wrong, you earn nothing.
Worked example: percentage change
Question: A potato cylinder has an initial mass of 5.0 g. After being placed in a sugar solution for 30 minutes, its mass is 4.2 g. Calculate the percentage change in mass. (2 marks)
Model answer:
Percentage change = (final mass - initial mass) / initial mass x 100
= (4.2 - 5.0) / 5.0 x 100 = -0.8 / 5.0 x 100 = -16%
The negative sign matters. It shows the mass decreased. Omitting it would cost a mark in some mark schemes.
Mistake 9: Writing too much on low-mark questions
A 1-mark question needs one clear point. Writing a paragraph does not earn extra marks, and it wastes time that should be spent on higher-mark questions. Match the length of your answer to the marks available:
- 1 mark: one sentence or a few words
- 2-3 marks: two to three concise sentences
- 4-6 marks: a structured paragraph or series of linked points
Mistake 10: Treating the last question as optional
Every exam session, some candidates leave the final questions blank or barely attempted. The last question on the paper is worth the same marks as any other. If you are running low on time, write bullet points. Even incomplete answers can earn marks. Blank answers earn zero.
