Economic geography connects what people do for a living with where they live and how wealthy their country becomes. This section of the Edexcel IGCSE Geography specification covers employment structures, economic change, the informal economy, population-resource theories, and energy security.

Economic sectors and employment structure

The Clark Fisher Model shows how employment structure changes as a country develops. In the early stages of development, most people work in the primary sector. As industrialisation occurs, the secondary sector grows. As wealth increases further, the tertiary and eventually quaternary sectors dominate. The United Kingdom, for example, has shifted from a manufacturing economy to one dominated by financial services, technology and creative industries. Nigeria, by contrast, still has a large primary sector, though its secondary sector is growing as oil revenues fund industrialisation.
Factors affecting the location of economic activity within each sector include access to raw materials, labour supply, transport links, government policy, markets and technology. These factors change over time: coal mines close when seams are exhausted, factories relocate to countries with lower labour costs, and technology creates entirely new industries in places that had no previous economic significance.
Reasons for changes in employment numbers include:
- Availability of raw materials: Depletion forces primary sector decline.
- Globalisation: Manufacturing shifts to countries with lower costs (deindustrialisation in developed countries, industrialisation in emerging ones).
- Mechanisation: Machines replace workers in agriculture and factories.
- Demographic changes: Ageing populations in developed countries increase demand for healthcare (tertiary).
- Government policies: Tax incentives, enterprise zones and investment in education shape where economic activity locates.
Impacts of economic sector shifts
The specification requires positive and negative impacts of economic sector changes in a named developed country and a named developing or emerging country.
Developed country - the United Kingdom: The decline of heavy industry in regions like South Wales and northern England led to mass unemployment, population decline and social deprivation. Positive impacts of the shift to services include higher average wages in cities like London and Manchester, growth of the creative and technology sectors, and urban regeneration programmes. Negative impacts include regional inequality, loss of traditional skills and communities, and insecure employment in the gig economy.
Developing or emerging country - India: Rapid growth of the tertiary and quaternary sectors (especially IT services in Bangalore and Hyderabad) has lifted millions out of poverty and attracted foreign investment. Negative impacts include widening inequality between urban and rural populations, environmental degradation from rapid industrial growth, and displacement of agricultural workers who lack the skills for service-sector jobs.
The informal economy
Informal employment refers to jobs that are not officially registered, taxed or regulated. The specification requires you to understand its causes and characteristics in a named megacity.
Causes include economic development that does not create enough formal jobs and rural-urban migration that floods cities with workers who need immediate income. In Lagos (Nigeria), the informal economy includes street vendors, waste pickers, motorcycle taxi operators and small-scale artisans. Advantages of informal work include flexibility, low barriers to entry and the ability to generate income without qualifications. Disadvantages include no job security, no legal protection, low and unpredictable earnings, and no access to healthcare or pensions.
Malthus and Boserup
The specification tests two contrasting theories about the relationship between population and resources:
Malthus (1798) argued that population grows geometrically (exponentially) while food production grows arithmetically (linearly). Eventually, population would outstrip food supply, leading to famine, disease and conflict (positive checks). The only alternative was moral restraint (preventive checks) to limit population growth.
Boserup (1965) argued the opposite: population growth is a stimulus for agricultural innovation. When more mouths need feeding, people find ways to produce more food through technology, intensification and new techniques. "Necessity is the mother of invention."
Exam questions may ask you to evaluate which theory is more convincing, using real-world evidence. The Green Revolution in Asia supports Boserup (technology increased yields dramatically). Famines in sub-Saharan Africa provide some support for Malthus (population growth outpacing food production in regions with limited technology and investment). A strong answer acknowledges that both theories capture part of the truth.
Energy demand and supply
Global energy demand varies by region and is affected by population growth, increasing wealth and technological advances. Wealthier countries consume more energy per capita, but rapidly developing countries like China and India are closing the gap fast.
You need to know the advantages and disadvantages of both non-renewable and renewable energy sources:

The energy gap is the difference between a country's energy demand and its domestic supply. Countries seek energy security by developing a balanced energy mix that reduces dependence on any single source or supplier. Energy can be managed sustainably through education (changing behaviour), efficiency (better insulation, LED lighting, more efficient engines) and conservation (reducing waste in industry, transport and the home).
Energy management case studies
The specification requires case studies of energy resource management in a developed country and a developing or emerging country.
Germany provides a strong developed-country example. Its Energiewende (energy transition) programme aims to shift from fossil fuels and nuclear power to renewables. Germany has become a world leader in solar and wind energy, but faces challenges including intermittency, grid capacity and the continued use of coal as a backup. The closure of nuclear plants after the Fukushima disaster increased short-term reliance on fossil fuels.
Kenya offers a developing-country perspective. Kenya generates a significant share of its electricity from geothermal energy, exploiting the Great Rift Valley's tectonic activity. It also invests in wind and solar. However, much of the rural population still relies on biomass (wood and charcoal) for cooking and heating, with consequences for deforestation and health (indoor air pollution).
Fieldwork connections
Paper 2 may test fieldwork methods related to economic investigations. Relevant techniques include designing and conducting questionnaires to survey employment types in a local area, land use mapping to identify economic zones, and using secondary data (census information, government statistics) to compare employment structures between regions. Be prepared to explain how you would present your data using appropriate graphs and to evaluate the reliability and representativeness of your sample.
Common mistakes
- Listing economic sectors without explaining the Clark Fisher Model. Naming the four sectors earns minimal marks. You need to explain how and why the balance shifts as a country develops.
- Confusing renewable with sustainable. Biomass is renewable (it can regrow) but not always sustainable (if forests are cleared faster than they regenerate). The distinction matters in evaluation questions.
- Weak case study detail in energy management answers. "A country uses solar power" is not a case study. Name the country, name the specific programme or project, and explain what has worked and what challenges remain, as the economic activity and energy Edexcel IGCSE answers that score highest always include this level of detail.
