Expressions And Formulae
Übersicht
Expressions and formulae are the building blocks of algebra. An expression uses letters and numbers to represent a calculation, while a formula links variables with an equals sign to model real-world relationships such as area, speed or cost. Mastering these ideas lets you translate word problems into compact symbolic statements that can be evaluated, simplified or solved.
In this topic you will learn how letters stand for unknowns and variables, how to write algebraic expressions using correct notation, how to substitute values (including negatives, decimals and fractions) into expressions and formulae, and how to rearrange a formula to make a different variable the subject.
Ziele
- Understand that a letter may represent an unknown number or a variable
- Use correct notational conventions for algebraic expressions and formulae
- Substitute positive and negative integers, decimals and fractions for words and letters in expressions and formulae
- Use formulae from mathematics and other real-life contexts expressed initially in words or diagrammatic form and convert to letters and symbols
- Derive a formula or expression
- Change the subject of a formula where the subject appears once
- [Higher] Understand the process of manipulating formulae or equations to change the subject, to include cases where the subject may appear twice or a power of the subject occurs
