Physical Processes Give Rise To Characteristic River Landforms
Übersicht
Rivers are among the most powerful sculptors of the physical landscape. From steep mountain valleys to wide, sweeping floodplains, the landforms you see along a river's course are all shaped by the same set of processes: erosion wears rock away, transportation moves sediment downstream, and deposition drops it wherever the current slows. Understanding how these processes interact is the key to explaining why rivers look and behave the way they do.
In this lesson you will learn the main types of erosion, weathering, mass movement, and transportation that operate in river environments. You will trace how channel characteristics change from source to mouth and examine the distinctive landforms created in the upper, middle, and lower course, from waterfalls and gorges to meanders, oxbow lakes, floodplains, levees, and deltas.
Ziele
- Fluvial processes involved in river valley and river channel formation: erosion (vertical and lateral), weathering and mass movement, transportation and deposition, and factors affecting these processes (climate, slope, geology, altitude and aspect)
- How channel shape (width, depth), valley profile (long and cross profiles), gradient, velocity, discharge, and sediment size and shape change along the course of a named river
- How river landscapes change over the course of a river, with distinctive upland and lowland landforms, including the formation of valleys, interlocking spurs, waterfalls, meanders, oxbow lakes, flood plains and levees
